Swim with Smith

As we reported in January, MAFP is pleased to announce Dr. Brent Smith of Cleveland as a candidate for AAFP Board of Directors. Elections will be held in October at the AAFP Congress of Delegates meeting in Chicago. The MAFP staff has worked on a slogan, website and campaign materials along side of Dr. Smith.

The 3 candidates running for the AAFP board wanted a cohesive approach for their campaigns so they chose a triathlon theme. MAFP dove in with the Swim with Smith campaign with a special mention of our own Mississippi River.

MAFP has not run candidate since 2005, and our theme, coincidentally has stayed the same. Dr. Tim Alford of Kosciusko was a serious runner, so the “Run, Tim, Run” campaign was a natural fit. Dr. Alford was one of 6 strong candidates running and although we failed to win the election, MAFP gained experience and respect with our candidate and his campaign.

We are excited about this opportunity and look forward to working with Dr. Smith on his journey to the AAFP Board of Directors.

MAFP Member Appointed to Osteopathic Family Physician Project Advisory Group

The MAFP is pleased to announce Christy Vowell, DO has been appointed to the AAFP Osteopathic Family Physician Project Advisory Group (DO-PAG). The DO-PAG was formed to provide family physician input into, and feedback on, AAFP’s work to better serve the nation’s osteopathic family physicians.

The MAFP leadership nominated Dr. Vowell to be the our representative for medium size chapters to this important working group. We were thrilled she was selected. Dr. Vowell has served as a District Director for the MAFP board, currently serves a rural community and will be a voice for our members. If there are issues you would like to bring to the table, please email [email protected]. Dr. Vowell has asked for input from members to share with the advisory group.

As AAFP membership has precipitously grown in this space, we need to ensure we are staying ahead of anticipating any unique needs and maintaining our posture as a compelling membership offering for the osteopathic career path. While we continue to evolve our member experience management capabilities, this is perfect timing and alignment with the objectives of that work to launch a DO-PAG to further enrich our insights and resulting strategy.

Impact of Family Medicine in Mississippi

The AAFP has shared with each state chapter the importance of

 Family Medicine of their state.

2023 David G. Hall Memorial

Scholarship Winner

The Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians Foundation is pleased to announce that Caden Ball, from Olive Branch has been selected as the recipient of a $1,000 college scholarship in memory of David G. Hall, M.D. Dr. Hall of Natchez passed away at the early age of 41 and the Foundation created this scholarship in his memory. Dr. Hall was very active in the MAFP and AAFP, as well as giving back to his community.

Ball graduated from Northpoint Christian School this past May and will attend Mississippi College this fall. At Northpoint, Ball earned the Honors Biology Award and Honor Roll for 2019-2022. He was also named the Who’s Who Most Talented 2022 and won the Bandmasters Championship in 2019-2020.

This scholarship is open to all Mississippi seniors who possess an aptitude in the sciences and show an interest in pursuing a career in the field of medicine. To qualify for the scholarship, the student must write an essay describing the impact of a Family Physician in his or her life and/or the role of the Family Physician in the community. Ball wrote his winning essay about the selflessness of the doctors and the legacy left behind by both his father and grandfather, both family medicine doctors.

“I have seen the significant impact firsthand of how a family physician impacts those in the community. For my grandfather and my father, their purpose was not about the number of patients they saw in any given day, but rather how they invested positively in each person so their lives were changed. Because of the impact I have seen in the community around me, I also want to move into a medical career. I want to influence the lives of those around me with the medical care I have seen my father and grandfather give. Legacy is about valuing and treasuring those things that have been handed down to you. I will always value and treasure the way I have seen positive impact through excellent medical care.”
