Greetings!
This month’s Newsletter edition will focus on airfield updates and construction projects that are crucial to maintaining safety and overall airport usability. Specifically:
The reconstruction of Taxiway Charlie is officially complete! This $5+ million-dollar project was finished with minimum disruption to everyday aircraft operations and a special thanks to Weston Boros and the entire Zachry Construction Team for an extremely well managed project.
Bids were received yesterday for the upcoming reconstruction of Taxiway Alpha, and we’re excited to report that a preliminary review reflects bids significantly below engineering estimates. This construction program is expected to commence later this year and we will keep you updated on its progress. This is great news!
A new hold-short pavement marking was painted this week on Runway 8-26 to enhance pilot awareness when approaching Runway 17-35.
Our dedicated airfield and grounds technician, Aaron Arguien continues to closely monitor and maintain the expansive 1,420 acres that makeup HYI. Many of his scheduled duties include critical inspections that can go unnoticed, i.e., drainage systems, approach surfaces, navaids, and security fencing integrity. All Customers of San Marcos Regional Airport are blessed to have him on the team.
We will be sprucing up airfield markings in the next 2 months so be on the lookout for applicable NOTAMS.
On June 8, FAA officially notified the airport that the runway alignment lights (the sequential strobe lights for the ILS to Runway 13 sometimes referred to as the “rabbits”) have been decommissioned. The Medium Intensity Approach Lights will remain in service. We unsuccessfully appealed this decision for several years before FAA ultimately elected to remove their equipment. In fairness, the equipment was over 50 years old, and FAA had historical weather data that showed how infrequently the “rabbits” would have enabled an ILS approach to lower minimums and it was virtually non-existent.
All these airfield activities have a direct, daily impact on our professional air traffic controllers, and we thank them for their steady, reliable service to our airport and the flying public. Thank you!
Please mark you calendars for the Airport Advisory Board meeting on July 13th at 10:00 A.M. at our office, and we hope you can join us.
These first few weeks of summer have been one for the books and please let us know how we can best support you and the safety of our Airport.
Sincerely,
Jim
