| As we prepare for the High Holidays during the sacred Jewish month of Elul, we can search our souls, read, attend services and, as modern Jews, use the internet to find inspiration. I listen to podcasts like Unorthodox Unorthodox Podcast | Tablet Magazine and read from the ancient books of our Jewish people, the Tanach, to remind me that each year, we can reboot ourselves, as we prepare to reflect on who we are and what we believe and how we can better ourselves in the coming New Year. | Find a special Reboot story co-written by JSL's Executive Director of Strategic Initiatives, Barbra Giles, and CEO Nancy Siegel Heinrich. |

Lives Well Lived
On November 14 at 7pm in the Berman Center for the Performing Arts, we will once again celebrate our older adults with a festival of storytelling. The residents who contributed to our soon-to-be released collection of mini memoirs, “Don’t Write Me Off,” will be there to sign the book during a dessert pre-glow. And then we will all enjoy an entertaining collection of short documentaries, including a tribute to Sue Marx and her Academy Award-winning documentary "Young at Heart." Visit https://jslmi.org/events/jsls-lives-well-lived/ for more information on tickets and sponsorship.

Volunteer!
Whether you have an hour here and there or would like to help out on a weekly basis, we have a job for you! In addition to the jobs listed on https://jslmi.org/volunteer/, we are looking for shoppers to do some light shopping for several residents. And we still need some folks to help with the upcoming holidays. Please give me a call or shoot me an email to discuss these and other opportunities to be a part of our thriving JSL community.

CHOIR TIME IN
THE SUMMER
|
The Hechtman Live Wire Choir sang their hearts out in front of friends, family and staff, some of whom joined in and sang along with the choir to many favorite hits. The choir was led by Hazzan Daniel Gross of Adat Shalom Synagogue. Tova Schreiber, Hechtman Life Enrichment Coordinator said, "The Live Wire Choir is one of Hechtman’s most popular activities. The residents enjoyed practicing for the recital and spending time together. And it gives us all a sense of pride," Two very special guests attended the program, Libby Levine and Mary Blowers, former JSL Program Coordinators who used to co-lead this choir comprised of Hechtman and Fleischman residents. Bravo to all. | THAT'S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR | Café Europa, the monthly Holocaust Survivor social event put on by JSL’s Program for Holocaust Survivors and Their Families attracts an enormous gathering of Survivors and friends. Featured here are Edith Maniker (left), a Kindertransport survivor, with good friend, Betty Ellias (right). | Now streaming, the Kitchen Radio Podcast brings listeners to the table of communities from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia for intergenerational stories of community life and ritual practices from guests who are part of a rising renaissance of creative food projects in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. |

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain
The Pep Boys
Throughout my chaplaincy rounds, I have the pleasure of meeting people who are delighted by weekly visits from “The Friday Boys.” They are a group of teenage boys from the local Chabad school who visit and inspire community members in their workplaces on Friday afternoons. People often share with me that sincerity is stamped on their faces.
There is another group of boys who repair automobiles. They are coined, “The Pep Boys.” I believe that the Chabad boys who flood our Jewish community with love on Friday afternoons, may also be referred to as “The Pep Boys.” They bring pep to so many people they visit with thirsty souls while inspiring them toward greater spiritual heights.
Shabbat Shalom by Phone - Enjoy some inspiration.

L’Chaim!
More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
