It’s That Time! Please Support the 2024 Annual Catholic Appeal!

You should have received the letter from Archbishop Etienne this week inviting all of us to generously support the more than 60 essential ministries and shared services of the Archdiocese through the ACA. St. John’s goal this year is $90,930. Each dollar makes a difference toward helping our many neighbors in need in the wider community of Western Washington, from Vancouver to Blaine and Forks to Snoqualmie.

Once we reach our goal, all funds collected after that will come back to St. John Parish. This year, our rebate will go into our Operating Budget to support necessary maintenance needs. There are always things that need repairs, replacement and/or upgrades. As an example, you may have noticed that around the Church we repaired the cement on the front steps and the walkway on the south side. We also leveled and laid cement at the crosswalk in front of Egan Hall. It is important that we continue to make sure these necessary repairs are made in a timely manner to best protect our spiritual home here at St. John.

Please prayerfully consider how you can participate in helping our parish be a light to others. If you have already made your donation, we thank you. The quickest and easiest way to donate is to do so online. Please go to www.archseattle.org/GiveACA.

The Book Club is reading To Know and Follow Jesus, a brief survey of contemporary Christology, that part of theology which reflects on the nature of Jesus. With the evolution of modern understanding of the New Testament, Christology is very much alive in the contemporary Church. Theologians re-examine scripture and the great Christological councils in the light of contemporary knowledge, cultures, and needs. This book briefly surveys that evolving understanding. Used copies are available online, and the author gave us permission to scan and share. Please contact diana.grusczynski@outlook.com with any questions.

Author Thomas Hart will join us at 6:30 on Tuesday, May 14th in the Parish Admin Building to discuss.

Tom grew up in Milwaukee in a large Catholic family. After high school he joined the Jesuits, and was ordained in 1970. He has a BA in classical languages and literature, an M.A. in philosophy, an M.A. in biblical languages and literature, and a PhD in philosophical theology. He taught for three years in a Jesuit University in Korea, which required him to learn the Korean language. He also taught at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley and Seattle University. Needing another degree to make a living, he got an M.A. in marriage and family therapy, and has done extensive psychotherapy and spiritual direction in Seattle. He and his wife, Kathleen Fischer, have published 22 books--on theology, spirituality, and the interplay between psychology and spirituality in therapy and spiritual direction.

Dismissal

The ancient church understood that the Mass was a sending forth. It is not so much a dismissal as a commissioning. We leave Mass now in order to live the mystery, the sacrifice, we have just celebrated, through the splendor of ordinary life in the home and the world.(Scott Hahn)
