Four distinguished educators from Dietrich College were honored during Carnegie Mellon University’s Celebration of Education in April.

Scheines Honored for Sustained Contributions to Education

As professor, department head and dean, Richard Scheines has been at the forefront of developing educational programs that benefit learners at CMU and across the globe. His work has been recognized with the Robert E. Doherty Award for Sustained Contributions to Excellence in Education at CMU’s Celebration of Education.

Niang Receives Award for Meritorious Teaching

Mame-Fatou Niang, associate professor of French and Francophone Studies and director-founder of the Center for Black European Studies and the Atlantic, has received the William H. and Frances S. Ryan Award for Meritorious Teaching at CMU’s Celebration of Education.

Gang Liu Receives Elliott Dunlap Smith Award

Gang Liu, a teaching professor of Chinese studies, has been named the 2024 recipient of the Elliott Dunlap Smith Award for Distinguished Teaching and Educational Service at CMU’s Celebration of Education.

Alex Tabor Receives Graduate Student Teaching Award

Dietrich College has named Alex Tabor the 2024 recipient of its Graduate Student Teaching Award, which recognizes outstanding expertise in all areas of teaching, including curriculum development, instruction and student mentoring.

Faculty Spotlight: Naama Ilany-Tzur

Naama Ilany-Tzur, assistant teaching professor in the Information Systems Program, examines how people make decisions online, particularly in the context of privacy and security-related choices.

  • Join an Evening with Carnegie Mellon University: Join Board of Trustees Chair David Coulter and CMU President Farnam Jahanian for an insider’s discussion about the university, its recent successes and the inspiring vision for its future. The event will be held at the Renaissance Waterfront Hotel, Boston, Mass. on May 22 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The event is open to Boston area alumni, parents, donors and friends. Please register for the event by May 14.


  • Join the “The Four Shakespeare Folios, 1623–2023: Copy, Print, Paper, Type” Book Launch on May 30, 2024, 4:30–7:00 p.m. in the Posner Center. This in-person event continues the year-long celebration of the 400th anniversary of the publication of Shakespeare’s first folio and coincides with the publication of “The Four Shakespeare Folios, 1623–2023: Copy, Print, Paper, Type,” edited by Sam Lemley, curator of Special Collections. During the event, a panel of several of the book's contributors will offer an in-depth look at Shakespeare’s work and contributions to society at large. A moderated Q&A will follow the presentations with a light reception afterward.
