Evening in Paris 2024 - Merci!

A huge "Merci" to our AL community for helping make Evening in Paris 2024 a wonderful success!

You helped to raise over $130,000 for the Annual Fund and Fund-a-Need. We cannot thank you enough for all the ways this community has shown up for our students and school this entire year.

Thank you to photographer and AL parent, Courtney Gilberto with Rose & Marigold Photography, for brilliantly capturing the atmosphere and fun of this magical evening!

AL Insights

Teacher Appreciation Week

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6-10. AL PTO is hosting a breakfast at all campuses on Wed. May 8. Hearty quiche and coffee will be provided by AL PTO. Volunteers are needed to donate additional breakfast items and assist with set up and clean up. Please sign up online

Families are also encouraged to show their appreciation throughout the week with notes, cards and gifts from the heart. Here is a suggested schedule to ensure all our wonderful teachers and staff feel the love:

  • Monday - Nurses
  • Tuesday - Counselors and social workers
  • Wednesday - Paraprofessionals
  • Thursday - Office staff
  • Friday - Teachers

We have created surveys that we will use to put together a nice "thank you" for teachers. We would love to hear from you and your student about what makes our teachers great and what you appreciate about them.

Please click here and follow the links for homeroom and also for your designated grade level ELA and special.  For families whose children receive special services- please also share the love for our SPED/ELL staff. We will hang up the answers for the teachers to see during teacher appreciation week.

GreenAL Oak Campus Cleanup Day

Please join the GreenAL committee for a campus cleanup day this Saturday! Feel free to drop in for as long or short as you would like. Bring your own trash grabbers, gloves, and or/bucket if you have them or just bring yourself - all ages welcome!

When: Sat. April 27, 9:30-11 am

Where: Meet at the picnic tables adjacent to the parking lot

Incoming 7th grader 3rd Language Choice

Sixth grade parents, Adam Nachum will be emailing you a survey for your student to complete by May 10th to inform the school of their 3rd language preferences. Your student will take either Mandarin or Spanish three days a week for two years (7th and 8th grade). You are more likely to get your first choice language if you submit your form on time.

Get Your Tickets for Pints and Pickleball

You do NOT want to miss this! Join us on Saturday, May 18, at Homestead Country Club for the 2nd Annual Pints and Pickleball tournament. Brackets are available for all skill levels, even first-timers. This is an adults-only event.

Tickets and additional details are now available at alpto.org/pickleball.

24-25 7th & 8th Grade Math Placement

Sixth and seventh grade families, we will be sending out math placement letters in the coming days. These letters will spell out what the math department and administration recommends for your child’s class placement next school year. Families will have a chance to respond with any questions or concerns.

AL in the Community

Congratulations to Oak fifth grader Ella Garr for winning the Missouri 2024 Earth Day slogan contest with "Protect the Earth for what it's worth". More than 150 Missouri fifth graders from 13 schools participated in the annual slogan contest. Click here for more information about the contest.

Armour Uniform Closet Needs You

Happy spring cleaning! Coincidentally, Armour is in need of uniforms to stock the closet. Biggest needs are gym uniforms, skirts, and men's khaki pants waist size 32 and 34. If you have anything you would like to donate...now is the time! Just drop them off at Armour (or pick up can be arranged). THANK YOU my fellow AL parents, in advance!! Susan Weis (Armour uniform closet organizer) susanweis@chewnings.net.

25th Anniversary Limited-Edition Items for Sale

Help us celebrate our 25th anniversary by sporting a limited edition 25th anniversary 3/4 zip pullover ($25), AL sticker ($2), or AL tote bag ($5)! All proceeds go towards the 25th anniversary celebration. Our staff has already been gifted pullovers and bags. Please note that pullovers are in men sizes only (shown below). Click here to order.

24-25 School Supplies and April Discount

Each spring, the PTO coordinates a school supply sale. Kits are created based on our teachers’ supply lists and are available for parents to order in advance. Parents receive an early bird discount when they purchase through Yubbler in the spring. The PTO receives a portion of the proceeds as well as a credit for our social workers to use! The supplies will be delivered to your home.

Click here to view the lists and to purchase your school supplies now. You do not have to buy the whole kit. If you order during the month of April you will receive a 20% discount on core items! *The middle school lists have had significant updates this year.

Summer After-School Care Enrollment

If you are enrolling your child for the first time to our after-school program, please note that you will need to complete the full state application, which can also be found on our website, to enroll your child. This comprehensive application ensures that we have all the necessary information to provide the best possible care for your child during their time with us.

If you have any questions or need assistance with the enrollment process, please call (816) 363-3819 or email afterschool@upperroomkc.org. We are here to help and ensure a smooth transition for your child into our summer after-school program.

Thank you for entrusting us with the care and well-being of your child. We look forward to

welcoming them to our summer program and providing them with a safe, nurturing, and

enriching environment.

Become a Host Family in the Fall

Have you ever considered hosting an intern in your home? Now is the perfect time to become a host family in the fall! Our interns are handpicked university students from French-speaking countries who are eager to spend a year working in the classrooms of our youngest students. We meticulously review their resumes and references, and we interview them at length to ensure they are the perfect fit for our school.

Our interns also fill out a detailed questionnaire about the host family experience, ensuring that they are perfectly matched with your family. As a host family, you'll have the chance to open your home and welcome an intern for a semester or for a year. You'll provide them with a private bedroom and meals when you are together as a family, while the school provides a generous monthly stipend to the intern and a monthly grocery of $100 to you, the host family. For more information please take a look at the following videos made by last year’s interns: FAQ and Experience Video.

Hosting an intern is not only a great opportunity for your family to experience francophone culture and language firsthand, but it's also an excellent way for your children to practice speaking French at home. Plus, your family will have someone special to visit when you travel to France in the future.

Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity! If you're interested in learning more about hosting an intern, please contact Maaria Riaz at 816-819-0017 or mriaz@academielafayette.org. Don't delay, become a host family today!

Wanted: ALIHS Internship Opportunities

As summer approaches our ALIHS students are looking for opportunities to broaden their horizons and gain experience in the world of work. We are lucky to have many professionals in our parent population. If you are one such person and know of an internship opportunity for high school students in your place of business, please reach out to Liz Seely at lseely@academielafayette.org. Our students have skills and talents in a range of fields including coding, graphic design, engineering, and journalism. They are interested in everything from health care to education to technical careers. Thank you for taking the time to reach out if you are aware of any relevant opportunities!
