MARCO is offering a 12-month fellowship where the selected fellow will coordinate with experts in the field to help communicate the latest research and actions related to microplastics and microfibers.

MACAN Fellowship


The Mid-Atlantic Coastal Acidification Network fellowship aims to provide an immersive, real world learning opportunity while also helping to build diversity within the field of coastal and ocean acidification (COA). The fellowship is designed to advance COA education in classroom settings in Virginia public schools and eventually other Mid-Atlantic states.

Webinar: Studying Impacts of Offshore Wind on Sea Turtles

The MARCO Ocean Conservation Work Group hosted a webinar in February with a featured presentation by Dr. Susan Barco highlighting recommendations from the Sea Turtle Chapter of the Regional Wildlife Science Entity Science Plan.

How Tuesday Webinar: Coastal and Ocean Acidification Monitoring Data

The March edition of the MARCO Portal's "How Tuesday" webinar series featured a presentation by Carly LaRoche, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Virginia in the Dept. of Environmental Sciences. LaRoche discussed a collection of maps showing where sampling is currently being or has been conducted recently in the region.

MACAN Spring Webinar: Priorities and Projects for 2024

Dr. Janet Reimer provided updates on MACAN's Workforce Development Fellowship, highlighted current research, outreach, and education initiatives, discussed ways MACAN can contribute to mCDR efforts in the region, and shared information about a Fall 2024 State-to-State OA Networking Workshop.

Proposed Shipping Safety Fairways

The Coast Guard is seeking public comment through May 17 on a proposal to establish a network of shipping safety fairways between the Rhode Island and Florida coasts.

Offshore Wind Speeds

Use our new slider to animate or toggle through monthly maps showing average monthly wind speeds at near surface and offshore wind turbine hub heights.  

Offshore Wind Updates

Several updates have been made to the Renewable Energy theme to keep up with recent developments in Mid-Atlantic and New England waters.  

Marine Birds

The Portal's avian distribution models have received several updates, including the expansion of maps showing marine bird species from seasonal to monthly in our Marine Life Library.

Marine Mammal Updates

Eight new data products depict the total abundance and species richness of marine mammals along the East Coast that are vulnerable to climate change.
