Social Justice Event
Warren Wilson College Farm Tour
Dr. Mallory McDuff teaches environmental education at Warren Wilson College and has written books and articles relating to climate change. Her students went into action following Hurricane Helene, helping our area deal with the crisis. Two of those students, Shoshana and Kai, will give a group from our congregation a tour of the farm/gardens at Warren Wilson and tell us what they did to help with recovery. The tour will end with a demonstration of how to make a natural salve.
The tour will be on April 22, 2025, on Earth Day, from 11:00-12:15 p.m. There is a limit of 15 people for this event, so be sure to sign-up in the portico after the service on April 13, 2025.
Environment
Don’t wait till Earth Day to be kind to Mother Nature. Join Asheville’s Sustainability Department in celebrating Earth Month by volunteering with community organizations like Bountiful Cities, Asheville Greenworks, and Riverlink.

“Dignity: The First Principle”
Rev. Michael J. S. Carter
The first of our 8 principles states that we, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalists Association, covenant to affirm and promote, “The inherent worth and dignity of every person.” Sounds wonderful right. I agree. People have said to me that for them this First Principle is also the most difficult of the principles to put into practice, especially in this new political climate. Let’s unpack this first principle to see what it is that we are actually agreeing to covenant with and what it is we really are affirming as UUs.

“Resurrection”
Rev. Michael J. S. Carter
For many UUs, the traditional story of the Easter Resurrection gives us pause. I like to remind folks that Dr. King and Dr. Howard Thurman did not believe in the literal resurrection of Jesus either.
UU History is firmly rooted in Protestant Christianity and during most of our history we affirmed these roots even as we moved further from orthodox Christianity. We challenged the traditional understanding of Jesus but never doubted his central importance. We applied reason and critical methodology to scripture and we redefined God as love. Eventually, many within our tradition did have doubts and new certainties were born.
UUism likes to trace its roots to the radical Protestant Reformation for we are just a bit over two centuries old. And it is worth remembering that the emergence of religious humanism within our tradition is a fairly recent phenomenon, occurring in the 20th century.
The idea of resurrection is central to Christianity, but the idea of a literal resurrection from the dead causes many religious liberals to ignore the idea of resurrection entirely. Yet, if we believe in a creative power or energy which shatters the icy winter weather with the life-giving miracle of spring, we have seen resurrection. Let's explore!
Please bring flowers for the Flower Communion portion of the service!
