Throughout history, people have looked up to others as models of virtue, piety, perseverance, dedication, etc. The world honors great people from the past who have accomplished amazing feats of physical power, mental ability, and intellectual prowess. At the same time, there are people who respect those who demonstrate great humility and self-sacrifice. As we study Matthew 11:1–19, God gives us a glimpse of one of the greatest people who has ever lived, John the Baptist. In this glimpse, we see John experiencing doubt. Is doubt a weakness? Yes, I believe it is. But I also believe we should be encouraged by the words of Jesus spoken to Paul in 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NKJV):
And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”
Have you ever considered your doubts about God or some aspect of His Word might actually point to your genuine faith in God? Our doubts are not a rejection of God, rather they reveal our lack of understanding. Doubt is not a decision; it is evidence of pondering what one has come to believe. Maybe we should look at doubt as an opportunity for further growth in our faith. The apostle Thomas is the one who usually gets the credit for doubting, but this Sunday we will see that he is not the only one, there is also Doubting John. And if we are honest with ourselves, there is also doubting Greg, Christine, David, Susan, Mike, etc. Please join us this Sunday as we worship the God who strengthens those who come to Him in weakness.
