28th Annual Science Symposium

The 28th Annual Holy Names Science Research Symposium was held Thursday, led by Mr. Licari.

It was an opportunity for students to present the results of a three-year program in which they choose the area to focus their research.

These ranged from the impacts of probiotics and meditation on "gut symptoms" to spinal cord injuries in rats, assessing brain waves when mind-controlling a drone, and the effects of silencing a gene commonly known to cause breast cancer.

Four students in all presented, including juniors Riley Schmitz and Patricia Whalen, and seniors Calista Hardesty and Carolyn Strum.

Leonard Receives Educator Honors

Congratulations to Kelly Leonard, who has been named by the National Society of High School Scholars as a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction.

Ms. Leonard was nominated by senior Alana Paurowski DeLude. The program honors educators worldwide, and was presented for Ms. Leonard's dedication to teaching and learning, as well as the difference she is making as a role model, source of inspiration, and leader in her profession.

This Week at AHN

We celebrated Bus Driver Appreciation Day this week by handing out goodie bags (complete with Penny the Panther keychains). We are so thankful for all of the bus drivers who get our students to and from school safely every day.

Pictured is Mr. Howard, the CBA bus driver.

As part of their unit on Agriculture, Mrs. Baxter’s Food for Thought class did a “Farm to Table” project on the nutritional benefits of various types of produce, where our produce comes from and how this produce gets to us.

Mrs. Baxter’s health class took a mini field trip down the hall to look at these projects and to use them in their nutrition unit so they too could understand the value of produce! Eat those fruits and veggies!

A special Earth Day prayer service was held this week.

This year's theme is Planet vs. Plastics, a commitment to call for the end of plastics "for the sake of human and planetary health."

The heat was on in Mrs. Rose’s Physical Science class where students are learning about heat radiation!

Congratulations to the Academic Challenge Bowl team, which participated in its final competition of the season on Wednesday, playing host to Tamarac, Menands, and Berlin.

The team was led this year by Ms. Devenney.

During a special assembly Friday morning, juniors and seniors learned about the dangers of impaired driving/driving under the influence.

A special thank you to State Police Sgt. Amy Anderson '93 (mom of Sophia and Sam Malorgio), and Sgt. Donald Fougere for speaking with students about driving safety ahead of prom and graduation season.
