DHCW finalists at HSJ Digital Awards

The Welsh Nursing Care Record, the Choose Pharmacy team and the team behind a suite of NHS Wales data dashboards, have been announced as finalists at this year’s HSJ Digital Awards. The awards celebrate excellence in digitising, connecting, and transforming health and care.

The data dashboards Information Specialists team entered the Driving Change through Data and Analytics Award jointly with the Welsh Value in Health Centre. Their entry celebrates the dashboards the teams have produced to support clinicians and decision-makers in NHS Wales, so they can provide the best possible care to patients.

The Welsh Nursing Care Records (WNCR) team entered the Digital Team of the Year Award. WNCR is a digital system transforming the way nurses record, store, share and access patient information. Rather than using paper documents, nurses can use digital devices to capture information and store it securely in the WNCR, so that care givers along a patient's healthcare journey have access to the same, up-to-date information.

The Choose Pharmacy team entered the Improving Out of Hospital Care through Digital Award. The joint entry with Cardiff University, Community Pharmacy Wales and Welsh Government celebrates the success of the Discharge Medicines Review (DMR) Service going digital. The DMR service started as a paper-based service in 2011, but following a review led by Cardiff University a new digital application was developed that links with other systems across NHS Wales.

Paediatric inpatient documents to go digital

A ground-breaking digital system for patient notes is set to move into its third phase with children’s inpatient notes to be included in the system.

Two years after the Welsh Nursing Care Record (WNCR) launched in April 2021, the project will now move to the next phase, with documentation for paediatric inpatients now going digital thanks to £1.8m of funding from the Welsh Government’s Digital Priorities Investment Fund.

Phase one and two of the project has focused on adult inpatient wards at acute and community hospitals. Traditional paper notes have been replaced with a digital system, transforming the way nurses record, store and access information.

Community Pharmacy System Innovation Fund to help digitise prescriptions in Wales

The Digital Medicines Transformation Portfolio and Life Sciences Hub Wales have launched a new fund to help the suppliers of digital community pharmacy systems in Wales deliver an electronic prescription service (EPS).

The introduction of an EPS in primary care in Wales will make the prescribing and dispensing process safer, easier and more efficient for patients and health care professionals. The work is a key part of the Digital Medicines Transformation Portfolio which is hosted by Digital Health and Care Wales. It will enable prescribers (such as GPs) to send prescriptions electronically to a dispenser (such as a community pharmacy) of the patient’s choice.
