THE OLD PATHS
___________________
Jeremiah 6:16 says, “Stand ye in the ways [roads], and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls…”
The “old paths” were tested, tried, and proven to line up with scripture. New thoughts or new ways may hold uncertainties or dangers. Be wary of them.
The church has a two-thousand-year track record of proven ways and doctrines. When new or unusual practices or doctrines emerge, one must be careful as it could be a trap to derail you. Study the issue in line with God’s word to test its veracity. The Berean church was commended by Paul for testing everything according to the word of God. [Acts 17:11.] We need to do it likewise.
Just because a doctrine or teaching or a catchy saying is old does not mean it is obsolete or no longer valid. God’s word does not change with time. New doctrines, teachings, or popular sayings must still line up with the Bible.
Yes, new interpretations of scripture do emerge at times. They may become popular. If your knowledge of the Bible is a bit weak, you could become fooled by a “new” thing. That is why we must constantly be reading and studying the Bible. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you the relevant scripture passage to confirm or dismiss teachings and He will.
The old paths [sound old teachings] are usually time-tested and proven. However, even the old teachings should not be taken for granted as always being scripturally true. Examine everything by the yardstick of God’s written word.
Be not deceived. Study to show yourself approved with God [2 Timothy 2:15].
