Risky Love

While Peter and John were speaking to the people, the priests,

the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came to them,

much annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming that

in Jesus there is the resurrection of the dead.

So they arrested them.

– Acts 4:1-3

We considered on Sunday how it is helpful to recognize love as more than a feeling; because when there is resistance or challenge (as in the Acts story excerpt above), we may not feel loving. But we can continue to practice committed self-offering (love) in holding onto God’s power and path that is healing, and to engage shema, to keep attending to God who can strengthen and heal us when we feel knocked about as the chaos is being healed and transformed. God’s love leads us to the nourishment and strength that we need (per our other reading from Psalm 23), but it is also for the purpose of sharing those gifts with others, not storing them up just for ourselves. And that requires risk; committed self-offering is letting go of tenacious self-protection and self-preservation. It is this kind of love that makes a difference, that embodies the reign of God.

It begins as we shema -- listen and open to God’s committed love for us by sacrificing and committing ourselves to receive this love. And then we are empowered to love in the way of committed self-offering. This is not easy. It is a love that stirs up trouble (if you missed it, I shared a story related to this at the link below) sometimes in us and through us, but we can keep returning to prayer, listening, worship, and community that nurture us in the living waters of the Spirit’s strength, courage, and love that allows us to share a risky love that brings healing, love, and hope for others. Jesus shows us the way.

Love,

Michael Bush

 Sunday Series

What do you want your legacy to be to CAUCC?

Sunday, April 28th at 11:00 am in Room 3

We believe Jesus taught us that helping others is spiritual giving. Remembering CAUCC in your Will and/or Trust provides sustainability to the church and the missions we provide. Your gift allows you to make a difference to the church and to the Tucson community after you are gone.

Please join us on Sunday, April 28th at 11:00 am in Room 3 to meet with members of the Officer's Club (former Council Officers) and Mr. Mark Valentine, Esq. to learn the basics on how to donate money to the CAUCC Legacy Fund through your Will and/or Trust.

We recognize that donating money to charitable organizations is a personal and spiritual choice. So, you may ask: Why should I donate to the CAUCC Legacy Fund?

The Church Council created the Legacy Fund as a way to sustain the future of CAUCC. The Legacy Fund is maintained as a permanent endowment-like fund with the annual interest available for the leadership to apply to strategic initiatives or capital campaigns, if desired. The fund is managed by the Financial Review and Management Team (FARM) of the church.

Please sign up (indicate if you will be more likely joining in person or via Zoom): Click here to sign up.

Sunday Series Gratitude

Most Sundays since September, we have offered various classes and study opportunities 11 a.m.-Noon. As we wrap up the “school year” of these classes, I share gratitude for those who taught, led, and co-led various sessions that included Science and Religion, Advent and the Arts, Talking About Social Issues through the Lens of Faith, a Redemption Series in Lent, and the recent Living Into Resurrection mini-series. We experienced the gifts of university and seminary professors, spiritual directors, artists, social workers, and clergy. Abundant thanks to Dr. Tom Lindell, Brigid Waszczak, Bess Woodworth, Dr. Karen Borek, Paige Hector, and the Rev. John Cheek. And deep thanks to so many of you who participated in the various sessions. Several of our guest leaders noted, with joy, that our CAUCC community is fully engaged, thoughtful, and a delight to work with! I concur!

Communion and Contemplation Sunday in the Chapel

8:30 am April 28th

Join Pastors Michael and John in a different kind of worship experience: a 30 minute service providing immersion in some reflective music, prayer, silence, and a spiritual practice contemplating the Sunday Scriptures and themes (that will also be part of the 9:30 am sanctuary worship), and then closing with communion by coming forward to receive elements. This worship opportunity may serve as a quiet preparation time for the 9:30 am worship in the sanctuary or may serve as your primary worship experience in community on a Sunday morning. Come, and see!

Centering Prayer

Centering Prayer is a method of Christian meditation which

has a strong emphasis on interior silence. People who practice centering prayer feel it helps them be more present to God and adds a sense of balance to their lives.

Healthcare Closet.jpg

Where, OH, Where …

are 3 of our loaned wheelchairs????

We have somehow lent out wheelchairs (or they escaped alone from the Medical Supply Closet without being checked out.) Please, please, if you borrowed one and are not using it RETURN it to the church office OR call or email Ida so it gets checked in properly. Not having any wheelchairs to lend is difficult because the Medical Supply closet is such an asset to the church.

Medical Supply Closet: We have canes, wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, and other items needed by congregants for a period of time due to injury or surgery. These items are available through the church office or parish nurse and MUST be signed out when taken and signed in when they are returned.

  • Wellness Check: There are people, not necessarily in the congregation, who avoid going to a doctor “because I’m not sick.” It is recommended that everyone see a healthcare provider at least every year when we are elders and at least every other year for youngers. Annual provider visits traditionally involve getting lab work and perhaps other tests deemed necessary.
  • Colonoscopy: now recommended starting at age 45 because there has been an increased number of young adults (< 50 year-old) that have colon cancer. The prep of a colonoscopy is touted as “awful” by many people BUT the colonoscopy often finds a polyp, that if left unchecked, can turn into cancer.
  • Mammogram: another area of prevention that are critical. The age to start was dropped to 40 years old due to breast cancer being diagnosed in women younger than 50.
  • Vaccinations: an individual necessity guided by a person and the healthcare provider.
  • Tetanus Injection: needs to be done every 10 years unless there is a major laceration or other trauma; then it will be given after five years. The tetanus bacterium can be found on wood, nails, plants, and other things and it can migrate into the body through even a small scratch on the skin.

My main message is KEEP IN CONTACT WITH YOUR HEALTHCARE PROVIDER at least once a year and more when necessary.

Blessings for good health!

If you have questions or concerns do not hesitate to contact me at imhgnp@msn.com or by phone 520-682-0291 before 9:00 pm.

Yours in Christ,

CAUCC Scholarship Opportunity

The CAUCC Scholarship application process has been streamlined this year. If you are a post-high school student in an accredited educational program, and you are a friend or member of CAUCC we encourage you to schedule a conversation with our Scholarship Committee. These formal conversations are scheduled for May 20th and 21st. At these conversations we will get to know your goals and concerns. You will need to bring your transcripts and/or current grade printouts (if your final grade has not yet been posted) for the two most recent semesters of your schooling. We will also need your complete contact information.

We will award scholarships by July 1st. Each recipient will be paired with a church mentor/coach who will provide support and friendship throughout the year.

Please note two major changes from previous year’s Scholarship program: There are no written essay requirements (the in-person conversation replaces this), and the maximum award amount will be $1,000.

If you have not already scheduled a specific time to meet on May 20th or 21st, contact Marilyn Weleck with email or call 520-549-9535.

Hey Snowbirds!

Please let the office know the dates for when you plan to be at your other address. This always helps the office keep in touch with you, and helps the church with event planning. Email Jay, click here. Thank you!

Good Samaritan Fund

Thanks to those who support our Good Samaritan fund! Through this fund, we have been able to help many of our members and friends (doctor, pharmacy, auto bills, etc.) Please consider sending a check to increase our total, then we will be able to help even more people. Just write in Good Sam on the memo line. Or online, here, same memo. Thank you!

Library Donations Accepted

It is through your generous donations that the church library is able to update and expand offerings available for check out. Any donated books, puzzles, or tapes we cannot put on the shelves, we will sell at our next book sale and the profits will go to the church Scholarship Fund. Please bring any items you wish to donate to the library or place them in the brown rubber receptacle in the breezeway between the sanctuary and the office (available 24/7). Thank you, the Library Team

UCC’s Strengthen the Church Special Offering

This special offering supports the expansion of ministry and growth of its local congregations. Your support of this offering will help the UCC fulfill its commitment to creating a just world for all by investing in new ministries and by investing in practices that meet the emerging needs of local communities.

As God calls our congregations to be the church in new ways, your generosity will plant new churches, awaken new ideas in existing churches and develop the spiritual life in our youth and young adults. Collection of donations will take place this year through Pentecost Sunday, May 19th. Donations can also be mailed to the church office, specifying Strengthen the Church in the memo line, or online-click here.
