Cherished Community:
As the spring sun warms the earth and the foliage around us blooms anew, we're reminded of the beauty of rebirth and renewal. This week, as we reflected on Earth Day, our commitment to our planet and people was reaffirmed. It’s a time to champion sustainability and consider how each of us can contribute to a thriving, healthy world. Alice Walker once beautifully said, “In nature, nothing is perfect and everything is perfect. Trees can be contorted, bent in weird ways, and they’re still beautiful.” Let us embrace the beautiful imperfections and the strength found in resilience, both in nature and in our own lives.
We also could not let the month’s end pass without acknowledging that April holds special significance as Second Chance Month: a period dedicated to embracing the opportunities to create meaningful and transformative pathways for individuals reintegrating into society. We are inspired by the impact of organizations like REFORM Alliance – working nationally to transform probation and parole by changing laws, systems, and culture to create real pathways to work and wellbeing – and Cypress Mandela Training Center – providing pre-apprentice construction and life skills training along with employment assistance locally here in the Bay Area. A justice system that holds people accountable and redirects them back to work and wellbeing leads to stronger families and safer communities. Check out REFORM CEO Robert Rooks’ feature on their new CMO who reentered from prison seven years ago and learn more about Cypress Mandela’s free training program which has changed the lives of many, including those reentering society.
