Shabbat Shalom CT!

This week was Israel’s Yom HaZikaron (Memorial Day) and Yom Ha'atzmaut (Independence Day). Our CEO, Carin Savel, was in Israel for all the celebrations. She had the incredible opportunity to spend the week with over 3,000 Jewish Federation executives and lay leaders, and we look forward to hearing all about it when she returns!

Here in Greater Fairfield County, we are about to launch our month-long Israel@75 celebration, with events for all – from lectures and classes to cooking and dancing. Click below to see the full program!

This week, Merkaz commemorated Yom HaZikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day, with a special ceremony created by the Federation’s Israel Emissary, Ofek, and students from his “Inside the Life of an Israeli Teen” class. Ofek and his students shared meaningful stories about four Israelis whose lives were lost in service to Israel and with whom Ofek had a connection. A memorial room was created in the pavilion at Congregation B’nai Israel in Bridgeport for students to light yahrzeit candles and place stones in their honor.

Easton middle-schoolers fly to Israel!

This week, I met with 7^th-graders at Helen Keller Middle School in Easton. During their classes, the students played a Kahoot! game about Israel. We learned about the different cities, culture and the different groups who live in Israel. We discussed how Israel sends rescue groups to countries hit by natural disasters and how Israeli technology has changed the world! Over 80 students learned about Israel throughout the day and Hebrew-school students were excited to see my familiar face and to show off their incredible knowledge from the classes they have in their synagogues.

It's always great to meet new people and engage more kids with Israel!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Are you interested in helping to preserve the stories of Holocaust survivors? Are you a survivor or adult child of a survivor who is interested in telling your story?

We need volunteers to help sort letters, catalogue photos and upload testimonials from local Holocaust survivors. We need general office help with creating databases, filing and fielding calls.

Are you interested in writing or telling a your story?

The story of your parents?

You will work with Federation staff and other volunteers to help archive these important documents -- and have an opportunity to protect the legacies of our survivors and their descendants.
