Coalition asks U.S. Congress to Support High-Capacity Transmission

A letter signed by a multi-sector coalition including CTC Global and over 40 other clean energy organizations, environmental groups, developers, manufacturers, labor and consumer groups, and other nonprofits was sent to Congress earlier this month urging robust funding for high-capacity transmission deployment and research through the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Fiscal Year 2024 budget.

As explained by Americans for a Clean Energy Grid, the joint letter highlights the abundance of new research, including DOE’s draft Transmission Needs Study, emphasizing the “pressing need for additional electric transmission infrastructure” in nearly all regions of the country. They state that increased funding for the Grid Deployment Office (GDO), Office of Electricity (OE), and Energy Information Administration (EIA) “is critical to drive substantial clean energy deployment, unleash billions in private investment, create thousands of new jobs, deliver low-cost energy to benefit customers, and substantially reduce emissions.”

“The expansion and modernization of our national power grid is central to meeting our urgent climate and energy security goals,“ the coalition wrote.

In the letter, the organizations encouraged Congress to consider the following:

·       Funding for the GDO to support innovative efforts to address planning and permitting challenges to enable a resilient and reliable electricity system;
·       Support for GDO to designate National Interest Electric Transmission Corridors on a route-specific, applicant-driven basis;
·       Funding for the OE to help ensure our electric grid is resilient to increasingly severe weather, cyber, and physical attacks;
·       Robust investment in the Transmission Reliability and Resilience and Applied Grid Transformation Solutions programs;
·       Additional funding for the EIA to upgrade its emissions data dashboard.

U.S. Senate Committee Discusses Reconductoring Benefits

During a recent hearing at the Committee on Energy & Natural Resources to discuss U.S. Department of Energy activities, Senator Martin Heinrich and Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm discussed transmission challenges and the importance of reconductoring.
Senator Heinrich commented that “We are not building transmission fast enough… It is the chief bottleneck for cleaning up our electric supply in this country… What is DoE looking at with respect to creating incentives for reconductoring existing transmission while we figure out how to build more transmission?”

Secretary Granholm replied “I’m so happy to hear you talk about reconductoring. I’m a huge believer in that since it doesn’t create the same ‘NIMBY’ problems that you might have in building new lines. So that technology through our grid deployment office, which was made possible through the bipartisan infrastructure law, there is a component of the funding that is toward grid improvements…”

BSPTCL Completes 22 ACCC® Reconductor Projects in a "World Record" 7.5 Months

With heroic leadership from ACCC® Conductor supplier and EPC firm Apar Industries, Bihar State Power Transmission Company Ltd. (BSPTCL) completed an incredible 22 ACCC® Conductor installations in a record 7.5 months, ~20 days ahead of a tight schedule.

With the clock starting on the project award date of August 2, 2022, and a completion deadline of March 31, 2023 – Apar assembled and managed nearly 1,200 crew members spread over two dozen teams using an impressive amount of equipment, supplies, and resources.

Apar’s highly experienced crews and ACCC Master Installers installed more than 2,450 kilometers of ACCC® Conductor on BSPTCL’s 22 reconductoring projects. These projects included 20 major river crossings, 27 railway crossings, 48 major highway crossings and 1,597 crossings traversing other T&D lines ranging from 11 kV to 765 kV - all without incident or shutdowns - often during adverse weather conditions.

While BSPTCL selected Casablanca and Drake size ACCC® Conductor manufactured by Apar Industries with a portion ordered through Gupta Power - with ACCC® Core supplied quickly by CTC Global’s California and Indonesia production facilities - CTC Global also manufactured and shipped its stainless-steel internal hardware components for 12,000 ACCC® dead ends and splices supplied to Apar for these projects by the TAG corporation.

The 800-circuit kilometer 132 kV and 220 kV projects increased BSPTVL’s transmission capacity by nearly 3,000 MW.

CTC Global, Apar Industries and Gupta Power are very proud to support Bihar State Power Transmission Company and their “Quality of Power to All” initiative. Please be on the lookout for more information about this project in the near future.
E-REDES Completes ACCC® Conductor Installation in Portugal

Supported by EPC firms Tecnerga and Emte Empresa de Montagem (EMTE), E-REDES (formerly EDP) installed Amsterdam size ACCC® Conductor on their double circuit Famalicao (REN) Lousado I e II 60 kV transmission line adjacent to the City of Porto, in northeast Portugal.

E-REDES, once again, selected ACCC® Conductor to increase capacity and reduce thermal sag on their existing (and slightly extended) 5.1 kilometer power line. The ACCC® Conductor’s higher strength, greater efficiency and resistance to salt air corrosion were also considered to be very favorable advantages for this application.

The ACCC® Conductor for this project was manufactured by FUX and ACCC® Hardware was provided by PLP. CTC Global’s Master Installer, Ismael Dones was on site to provide training and support. This is E-REDES’ 8th successful ACCC® Conductor installation in Portugal since 2009.
Bangladesh Team Visits CTC Global’s Headquarters

Earlier this month, CTC Global was delighted to host a number of team members from Power Grid Company of Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Ministry of Power. Their visit allowed our guests to tour CTC Global's ISO certified production facility and ISO/IEC Certified lab and witness testing of materials manufactured for a project underway in Bangladesh.

Claudia Ornelas, Fulfillment Manager; David Chiesa, VP Global Sales & Business Development; Tom Parsons, Sr. Engineer; and Cody Rowe, EHS Director and others at CTC were on hand to support their visit, answer questions and discuss future needs.

Move the Cone!

Its nice to see more electric car charging stations pop up at CTC Global's manufacturing plant in Irvine, California. Many of our staff members are already commuting to work in their electric cars. Maybe we can inspire others to join the growing list?
ACCC® Conductor is Combatting Climate Change

ACCC® Conductor line loss reductions are currently saving ~10,400,577 MWh per year. At the international average of 0.925 pounds of CO2 per kWh, that equates to reducing CO2 emissions by 4,365,033 metric tons per year. This can be translated into powering 970,656 homes in the U.S. or removing 948,920 cars from the road. Assuming the lines were being fed by thermal power plants that would also equate to saving 124 billion gallons of water – or filling 190,000 Olympic size swimming pools. (The average thermal plant uses ~12,000 gallons of water per MWh). Cumulatively, the ACCC® Conductor has reduced CO2 by ~22,966,850 metric tons.
