Grantee Story: YMCA of Ithaca & Tompkins County

We are excited to have made a grant to the YMCA of Ithaca & Tompkins County to support their Stay & Play space!

"Thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation of Tompkins County, our multipurpose Family Play Center is now open! The space features a two-level indoor play structure alongside a variety of books, games, toys, puzzles, coloring supplies, and more. All visitors are welcome to use this space outside of Stay & Play hours (see below). Parents or guardians are required to stay in the room and supervise."

"Updating this room with new multicultural puzzles, books, dolls and puppets has been a true blessing to the YMCA of Ithaca & Tompkins County. The new Family Play Center also came with comfy chairs for caregivers to read books with children and tables to do arts and crafts with. I cannot begin to express how much I enjoy visiting the space and seeing children and families loving the space with huge smiles on their faces.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart!"

Incorporating DEI within your Organization:

A Panel Discussion

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) play a vital role in philanthropy, shaping its effectiveness and impact on society. We ensure that our practices are inclusive and equitable, benefiting a diverse range of individuals and communities. By prioritizing equity, our philanthropic efforts focus on empowering marginalized communities and redressing historical injustices.

Gloria, Chief Inclusion & Community Engagement Officer participated in a panel discussion to share her own story and insight into what DEI means to her. George Ferarri, CEO moderated the panel. Learn how local organizations understand the unique needs, aspirations, and challenges of diverse communities, and how they tailor their interventions and programs accordingly. Thank you to the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce for organizing this panel discussion.

2023 Fund-Advisors Luncheon

Q: How did you get involved with the Community Foundation?

A: Years ago, I convinced George, my husband, that we should open a fund at the Community Foundation because we could focus on community needs rather than how much the CircleLink Fund increased in value. I then volunteered on a Grant Review Team and was pleased to learn Community Foundation committees work together to review requests such as the library grants.

I then gained further knowledge from attending their group meetings like Let’s Talk Series, or donor lunches. All the while I enjoyed meeting new people and gained knowledge from discussions with them in their journey with the Foundation.

I recall one child care center lost heat in the dead of winter. The center asked for financial help and the Community Foundation got a grant out very quickly and the day care was able to stay open!

Site Visit: Saoirse Pastures

What a wonderful way to start the day! Nestled on beautiful green and lush pastures is a sanctuary, a place that has rescued and taken in over 150 animals.

In 2017, Shannon Hamilton, Co-Founder, purchased land with acreage and immediately moved to help fill the massive needs of the greater farm animal welfare world. Saoirse Pastures rescues unwanted, abandoned, relinquished or abused farm animals; facilitates re-homing, and provides lifetime sanctuary in a sustainable, safe, enriched environment.

Saoirse Pastures is the home to many animals like Pebbles & BamBam, Phineas & Pherbs, the triplets, and…Mabel, a 300 pound pig who has the sassiness of a young teenage girl. Gloria said, "I learned so much about the welfare and care taking of these animals, but more importantly, I saw the commitment and dedication to creating a better and more comfortable life for them."

A fall of 2022 grant recipient, Shannon reported "one of the main items we were able to purchase with the unrestricted funds from the 2022 fall grant was a large hay wagon for our cattle herd. We deal with a lot of hay in very..." Read more, HERE

August is International PEACE Month

“It isn’t enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn’t enough to believe in it. One must work at it.”

~Eleanor Roosevelt

The pursuit of peace is a universal aspiration among all humanitarians worldwide. Leaders, activists, and organizations across nations tirelessly champion the cause of peace and strive to put an end to conflicts. The month of August is a time to celebrate peace and reflect back on tough times and reevaluate what it means to have peace among us. Originally founded on August 16, 1926, at the Democratic Peace Conference in Germany, August became International Peace Month as a time to reflect specifically on the First World War.

This month commemorates the aftermath of a series of miscalculations... Read more, HERE
