DAY MISSIONS FUND UPDATE AND INVITATION

For a number of years, the Day Missions Fund, administered by the church council, has helped facilitate hands-on missions work around the world and in our own community.

For the fiscal year September 1, 2021August 31, 2022, the council approved $5,000 for emergency help in Ukraine and $5,000 for a Sharefish project in Honduras.

For the fiscal year September 1, 2022August 31, 2023, the council has approved $750 for CROP Walk, $1,204 for Project Ruth food boxes (for relief in Ukraine), $3,500 for house construction in Honduras through Monte de Horeb Ministries, $5,000 for the renovation of the former First Presbyterian Church of Ahoskie so that it can function as a community ministry center, and $8,000 for a building project in El Carrizo, Honduras, through Sharefish.

This summer, the council will begin receiving requests for the fiscal year September 1,
2023August 31, 2024. Applications may be found here and submitted to Dr. Chapman or brought to the church office. Guidelines for the fund may be found here.

We are grateful for those who envisioned this fund and for all who have contributed to it. It is a sign of our church’s commitment to missions involvement and a means through which to live it out faithfully. We encourage any member or group of people in the church considering a mission project to apply for help from this fund.

OUR THANKS TO THE RISK MANAGEMENT TEAM

I sent the following note to the risk management team that guided our decisions through the pandemic (Jon Baldwin, Sam Ewell, Ron Maness, Alice Marshbanks, and Hollis Yelverton). I encourage you to express a personal word of gratitude to these fellow church members who have helped us through challenging times. - Dr. Chapman

After communicating with Ron, I am writing to acknowledge formally that the sun has set on the COVID-19 Risk Management Team. Ministers love to elucidate the obvious… Even if we had an ongoing need and one could emerge in the future you have served long enough in this demanding role. I don’t have words to express how grateful I am for your service and how much the church has benefitted from your wisdom, honesty, patience, and courage to guide difficult decisions. It has been a challenging journey, to say the least, one that has caused division in many churches, but our church has not encountered those added burdens, thanks to your work. COVID-19 is still with us, of course, in a less oppressive way, and we face many post-COVID challenges, but thanks for helping us though the pandemic mode of this disease. May our culture and world learn from the experience.

SPECIAL NOTICE ABOUT CHURCH ENTRANCES

Please note: until July 19, the state parking lot (on the corner of North Salisbury and Hillsborough Streets) will not be open due to construction on the lot, and the door to the Lewis Building will not be unlocked until the work is finished. Lights and cameras are being added to the lot for security. The door into FBC from that lot can only be used as an emergency exit, not an entrance. A pathway down the side of the building to Hillsborough Street has been marked off by the state. In an emergency, exit and go to your right. If you have any questions, please contact Wayne Hager.

HECK-JONES OFFERING

Our emphasis for this year’s Heck-Jones offering is on the basics of life, food, and shelter. The namesakes of this offering were about basics in the 1800s as original members of this church. If you enter the sanctuary through the gathering room, you will see their portraits on the wall. We continue their timely legacy when we give of our abundance to help those who struggle to find food and proper shelter, both around the globe and right here in our own community. Our goal this year is to raise $10,000 for these worthy non-profits doing the work of feeding and housing our neighbors. Please give prayerfully and generously to this offering in support of these life-changing organizations.
RISE Against Hunger • $4,000
We hope you will join us Sunday, September 17, in the fellowship hall after worship for our annual meal-packaging event. RAH is an international hunger relief organization that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable. The 10,000 meals we pack this year will bring our church record to 100,000 meals.
Habitat for Humanity of
Wake County • $3,000
Through our work with the Downtown Faith Coalition, we will be helping provide affordable housing right here in our community. Habitat is a non-profit organization that helps families build and improve places to call home. Families build their own home alongside volunteers and then pay an affordable mortgage. As the housing crisis grows in Wake County, Habitat's work continues to make the biggest impact.
ONE Wake • $3,000
ONE Wake is a non-partisan, multi-racial, multi-issue group of religious congregations, associations, and other non-profits in the Wake County area. ONE Wake is about people: developing their innate skills and ability to work with each other to identify common problems, to find or create solutions, and to work together to implement systemic changes within society to achieve the common good.
