INDUSTRY NEWS

Stakeholders praise housing focus but cite budget gaps

Construction stakeholders found lots to like in the Justin Trudeau government’s latest budget but several expressed concern over what they perceived as gaps, misfires and missed opportunities.

The Canadian Construction Association (CCA) and the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies — Canada (ACEC) suggested Budget 2024 missed the mark by focusing extensively on housing and related issues to the exclusion of important long-range infrastructure planning. The multiple new housing supports mean the construction sector will be busy for the near and medium terms, others said, but the lack of fiscal restraint and the expansion of capital gains taxes are causes of concern.

Canada’s construction sector navigating challenges

Despite struggles to make headway in 2023, Canada’s construction market remains resilient, with promising prospects on the horizon for certain segments in 2024, reports Arcadis in its 2024 International Construction Costs Index. According to the company’s latest findings, Canada’s construction landscape is set for a nuanced journey amid evolving market conditions.

In 2023, Canada experienced modest economic growth, with GDP rising by 1.1 per cent, marking a third consecutive year of expansion. While growth is good, the rate was the slowest since 2016, aside from the pandemic year, underscoring the challenges faced by the construction industry.

National tour offers overview of major new CCDC documents

Etobicoke Civic Centre development breaks ground and many barriers

Construction is beginning on the new Etobicoke Civic Centre (ECC) and once it’s complete, it will offer city services, provide a hub and public square for the community and create access to affordable housing.

A groundbreaking took place recently at the site. The mixed-use development, located at 3755 Bloor St. W. near Kipling Avenue in the redeveloped ECC Precinct, features 508,000 square feet of public-facing space. The project will mark the city’s first civic centre development in 50 years.

The owner on the project is the City of Toronto and the foundational work to develop the new centre was led by CreateTO, the city’s real-estate agency.

Why Your Building Must Be Accessible

In modern society, accessibility is not just a catchphrase. It is a testament to the progress we have made in being more inclusive of all individuals and to our understanding of how accessibility benefits everyone. For example, a wheelchair ramp not only helps people who use wheelchairs but also aids older adults, parents with young children, and others who are injured or have a temporary disability. The enactment of the Accessible Canada Act (ACA) in 2019 demonstrates Canada’s commitment to accessibility and inclusiveness. It marks the culmination of standards and laws passed over the years by provinces, such as the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) in 2005.

Understanding and Preventing Chronic Dehydration in the Workplace

In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it’s easy to overlook the simple act of staying hydrated. Yet, chronic dehydration is a pervasive issue that can have serious consequences for our health, especially in the workplace. A study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition reported that 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. This includes both work and non-work hours. From decreased cognitive function to an increased risk of accidents, the effects of dehydration are far-reaching and often underestimated. That’s why implementing a comprehensive hydration program is essential for keeping workers safe and healthy year-round.
