Hello from Kate

My husband, daughter, and I went on a family vacation to France this past month. We spent several days in Burgundy (for my husband’s work) and topped off the trip with a weekend in Paris (our 6 year old daughter’s dream come true). We had everything planned – every meal, every activity, every expectation planned to perfection. And guess what happened? Adelaide spent nearly the entire trip in bed with a fever watching French cartoons.

Fortunately, we had several bright spots along the way and she was back in fighting form come the Paris leg of the trip. But to be perfectly honest, I passed much of the time (at the hotel) pouting about the whole trip. I struggled to see the bright moments – picnicking at one of the most famous vineyards in Burgundy under the shade of an old tree, spending the 4th with friends in their 18th century town while the children ran through cobblestone streets – and it wasn’t until I threw my own little temper tantrum that I realized the trip was not doomed. I was the one raining on this Parisian Parade. So I used an exercise that, stateside, I use every day. And that’s meditation. I suppose I thought being on vacation meant taking a vacation from every daily ritual that keeps me sane – working out, eating well, meditating. So, while I forgot to pack that one critical piece of luggage it was easy enough to conjure back and do one of my go-to meditations - three moments of gratitude. Now, I’m not talking about “I’m grateful for the sun” (though that is a-ok in a pinch, especially these days). I’m talking about hyper-specific moments that happened over the course of the day: “I’m grateful for the look on Adelaide’s face when she heard me speak French for the first time”, or “I’m grateful for sharing a bottle of wine with my husband while sitting in our hot little air bnb and listening to the city sounds down below”. Those are moments that are not captured in any of our photos but those are the ones that will stay with me the most. I suppose my point in all of this is - we all throw our hissy fits from time to time, but remembering and relying on the habits that bring out the best in us exist to serve and preserve who we are so we can be better in the world. I would love to hear what some of those cornerstone habits are for you.
