Synod 2023 in Vancouver

An invitation from Bishop Dan

Dear members of ANIC and friends in Christ,

I am glad to officially invite you to attend our annual general synod which will take place this year at Anglican Network Church of the Good Shepherd in Vancouver on November 15–17, 2023, and will include a day for clergy on Tuesday November 14th. Delegates and observers can register online here.

Our Theme

The theme of this synod is “Sent By Jesus” from John 20:21: Jesus said to his disciples again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” In the next verse he promises the Holy Spirit to fill them as they go into the world with the Gospel. This verse reflects and shapes our diocesan priority of equipping Bold Witnesses as Jesus sends each of us into the world in the power of the Holy Spirit to share His Gospel.

Guest Speaker

A key focus at this year’s synod will be evangelism, in response to the call in the recent GAFCON Kigali Statement for Anglicans worldwide to commit to a decade of evangelism and discipleship. At that GAFCON gathering in April evangelist and author Richard Borgonon from the UK led an excellent workshop, presenting a very practical and effective tool for evangelism which anyone can use with a friend or colleague called The Word One to One. He has graciously agreed to come to Vancouver to teach and equip us in this biblically grounded evangelism tool on the Wednesday of our synod. He will also be leading a parish equipping day for all ANiC churches on Tuesday, Nov 14th at 7pm at St. John’s Vancouver, and all are welcome to attend.

Electoral Synod

Another important aspect of this year’s synod is that we will elect a suffragan (assistant) bishop who will be based in Western Canada. Please pray for God’s wisdom and leading by His Holy Spirit for this election process and for the candidates in the months to come. You can learn more about the electoral nominating process here.

Dear friends, will you join me in praying that God will strengthen and encourage our diocese in His Gospel through this synod gathering, so that each of us may grow as faithful ministers of this good and glorious news of Jesus.

Yours in Christ,

The Right Reverend Dan Gifford

Diocesan Bishop
