NOTES FOR JULY 1, 2022

News & Notes from Fr. Pete Jankowski

Honoring the Service Element of Our Border Town Parishes!!!

As you know, we have been working with various organizations who have donated to us box trucks of food for the needy of our area (I just had to refuse an entire box truck of frozen meats because we had no way of bringing them to our parishes!!! OUCH!!!). One of our donors connected St. Pat’s to a generous donor who is looking at the parish’s church, rectory and garage roofs with the hope of offering at a significantly discounted price (or even donating!) shingles to repair a much needed damaged set of roofs.

Towards this cause, the Illinois Migrant Council worked with Ema Elvir to grace St. Patrick’s on June 26, bringing a hundred computers, tons of food and free health screenings to the migrants of our area who were in need (migrants are those folks of any color, language or way of life who try to settle into our areas to establish a home for their families).

On Saturday morning (while Rick Preston and a bunch of nice folks were preparing for St. Pat’s Golf outing – thanks, all, for your great work!!!), I was greeted in the middle of a rainstorm by four pallets of computers that I ended up dragging into the parish, with a little help. The donations of food, vaccinations, computers and health screenings did not go to waste – over ninety of the computers were claimed on Wednesday and the rest were handed out yesterday when the Migrant Council returned to help the folks in Hopkins Park and the surrounding area.

We ended up with a little food left, which Ruben Andrade provided for migrant workers who were not available on Sunday because of their employment at a local lumberyard. Connie Stirling took whatever pineapple and mangos that were left to distribute to the Martinton Food Pantry on Monday and the volunteers who clean our rectories relived us of the leftover yucas that stayed behind in our basement (I’m not a fan of yucas but to each their own!!!).

Ema will be working with the migrant council in the future to provide other services to the needy of our area. I also picked up a few nice contacts for the Hispanic Ministry Course the University of St. Francis asked me to teach this fall in Joliet!

In the meantime, the good folks of Bethlehem Gifts sold their olivewood products to the faithful of our parishes this last weekend. With a gentle arm twisting, this good family will return to sell more olivewood products during our St. Anne Day celebration on July 26th. Thank you Nabil Rishmawi and family for joining us at the St. Anne Day Festivities!!!

Again, the office will be closed on July 4. When we return – we kick into high gear in preparation for our 142nd Novena in the city named after our Lord’s grandmother!!!

ONLINE VIDEOS THIS WEEK

WATCH THE MASS THE 14TH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME ONLINE

Celebrated at St. Anne Chapel, At this Mass, the homily focuses on the small acts of kindness in life that make all the difference in the world. For me, this includes two individuals who crossed my university and RCIA path that later in life were ordained to the Catholic priesthood - Frs. Andrew Buchanan (Joliet Diocese) and Benjamin Petty (Archdiocese of Washington, DC).

A PREVIEW OF THE ONLINE MASSES FOR THE ST. ANNE NOVENA

JULY 17-26

MASS - DAY 1 OF NOVENA

To begin this Novena, Fr. Pete preaches about the primary importance to building a prayer life with God. As members of the Body of Christ in local parish communities, that prayer life must result in serving those around us in God's name - Mary's prayer must result in Martha's work.

MASS - DAY 2 OF NOVENA

Speaking about the importance of the miraculous healing the relic of St. Anne has offered in the history of this relic, Fr. Pete highlights the stories of faith and healing in today's homily.

MASS - DAY 3 OF NOVENA

In his homily, Fr. Pete speaks about the need to treat each person as a brother or sister, as a sacred person created by God and part of the "Body of Christ," whether the person we encounter accepts this understanding or not.

MASS - DAY 4 OF NOVENA

In his homily, Fr. Pete speaks about how evangelization must follow the farming methods of the First Century and the current methods of Third World Farmers - by throwing the seed liberally wherever we can to produce thirty, sixty and a hundredfold.

MASS - DAY 5 OF NOVENA

In his homily, Fr. Pete speaks of our need to maintain this vocation called has called each of us to live, despite the temptations of the world that often attempt to draw us away from our ultimate purpose in life.

MASS - DAY 6 OF NOVENA

In his homily, Fr. Pete references a trip he was asked to lead with a group of pilgrims who visited the Holy Land. The gift of walking Jesus' steps on the road of faith and praying where the Lord prayed serves as the foundation for the type of life we are called to walk today.

MASS - DAY 7 OF NOVENA

In his homily, Fr. Pete speaks about the way society forms the individual, as opposed to the manner which God or a Catholic parent would. As referenced by Morrie Schwartz ("Tuesdays with Morrie"), "Don't let society dictate your culture - you dictate your own!"

MASS - DAY 8 OF NOVENA

On this EIGHTH Day of the St. Anne Novena, Fr. Pete preaches about the need to follow the mandates of the "Our Father," according to the gospel of Luke. This prayer can serve as the most uplifting or damning prayer in the believer's life, depending on whether the believer truly wishes to live like God or chooses to disregard the mandate and live under one's own desires. Fr. Pete also offers a special blessing to grandparents at this Mass as well.

MASS - DAY 9 OF NOVENA

On this NINTH Day of the St. Anne Novena, Fr. Pete talks about the importance of HUMILITY, which serves as the foundation for our prayer life. It was through Jesus humbling himself on the cross that the apostles learned this lesson of faith, passed on to bishops who are to model that same type of life.

MASS - SS. JOACHIM & ANNE

In his homily, Fr. Pete references a poem to "The Mother of the Madonna," by Rev. Matthew Russell, SJ, the first editor of "The Irish Monthly" periodical that reflects on the role of grandmothers in our life. Fr. Pete offers a special "Prayer for Special Favor" and a "Blessing to Grandparents" at this Online Mass as well.

HOLY LAND TRIP 2022

2022 Holy Land.gif

From February 8-17, Fr. Pete led a group of thirty-four members of the Border Town Parishes and the Camino y Esperanza Retreat House on some of the most spiritual places our Lord walked some two thousand years ago. The spirit of this particular group often played out the life of our Lord, modeling the type of passion, death and resurrection our Lord offered in their prayers and joy of heart in the life of a Christian. Thanks to Ana and Eileen Rivas for making this trip possible for our Border Town Pilgrims. All pictures can be accessed on the parish website.
