Project SEMBRAR Students Get First-Hand Experience in Urban Farming and Management

LaGuardia is giving students the opportunity to experience all aspects of urban farming and management, through Project SEMBRAR, thanks to the generous support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). Project SEMBRAR was the brainchild of Dr. Preethi Radhakrishnan, Program Director of LaGuardia’s Environmental Science Program, who co-taught the summer program with Dr. Holly Porter Morgan and Dr. Nicolle Fernandes. This project builds on the new track offered at LaGuardia in Sustainable Urban Agriculture. As part of this summer's 3-week paid internship, students visited and volunteered at urban farms in Queens and Brooklyn for the first two weeks and then completed a week-long residency at SUNY Cobleskill.

On July 26, the University Professional and Continuing Education Association (UPCEA) selected Dr. Ramón De Los Santos, Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, as a Bethaida “Bea” González Diversity Leadership Scholar and will receive a fully funded scholarship for its Professional, Continuing, and Online (PCO) Leader Certificate Program. The goal of the Diversity Scholars program is to equip diverse professionals at any stage of their career with the skills and knowledge needed to move into leadership positions on campus, in the field of professional, continuing, and online education, and in UPCEA. De Los Santos will begin his first course, “Leading with Diplomacy, Data and Drive: The Unique Imperative of the PCO Leader,” on August 14.

LaGuardia Faculty Elected to Represent NY at National Delegation

Professors Sandra Ribeiro and Debra Engel of LaGuardia’s Physical Therapist Assistant program were elected to represent New York at the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) House of Delegates, the policy making body where decisions on issues relating to the association and the profession are made. The national conference, held in Washington, D.C. and attended by 480 delegates, reviewed motions pertaining to therapeutic practices and health care models impacting therapists and patients. This year, several motions were passed that specifically related to the Physical Therapist Assistant profession which highlights the need for greater representation at the association level, increase their treatment role, and review the supervision that can only improve and expand the Physical Therapist Assistant responsibilities in practice. It was ultimately a win for Physical Therapist Assistants and LaGuardia’s students entering the field.
