The Messenger of St. Mark's | After Pentecost | September 14, 2023

For your thought:

We do not live to ourselves, and we do not die to ourselves. If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's. For to this end Christ died and lived again, so that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

--Romans 14:7-9

Cards and gifts of gratitude are welcome!

Karen remains a member of the Altar Guild as the "Director Emeritus" and helps the newly formed and evolving teams that now care for our Altar and Liturgical Preparation.

Embracing God's Gifts in Creation to Help Tend our Pain & Our Healing

Sundays, 5-6pm in Stoney Chapel

9/17, 9/24, 10/8, 10/15

We are grateful for the tremendous care and courage demonstrated by all the members of St. Mark's who chose to participate in our recent Community Conversations around surviving, preventing, and responding to abuse. The painful reality of abuse--experiencing it, talking about it, hearing about it, learning about it--often triggers a variety of intense emotions, including anger, grief, pain, fear, regret, shame, sadness, isolation, and confusion. As a church community it is important for us to acknowledge and affirm these difficult emotional experiences, and to avail ourselves of the many and varied resources God provides to support us in processing difficult emotions in ways that enable us to experience greater healing, wholeness, connection and freedom. These healing resources may include: sacraments, scripture, song, prayer & spiritual practices, somatic (body-based) practices, community, and creation itself.

St. Mark's associate rector and priest, Mother Sylvia, and St. Mark's member and somatic therapist, Marcie Holland, invite you to join them on Sunday evenings (9/17, 9/24, 10/8, 10/15) at 5pm in Stoney Chapel to share, experience, and explore together a variety of simple resources and practices that may help us hold and move through intense emotions in a healing way. You are welcome to join us for one, several, or all four sessions.

In these sessions we will share scripture, song, silence, and simple practices that invite us to explore and experience God's healing power in our places of pain through the fundamental elements of God's Creation: Fire, Water, Earth, and Air.

Formation: Breathing Underwater: Spirituality and the 12 Steps

Sundays 11:15 a.m.

Location: Classroom 3 (Montessori classroom nearest the kitchen)

Facilitator: Thomas Russell

Join us for a weekly time of mutual support and accountability in community. We’ll begin each session by reading together a chapter from Richard Rohr’s book, Breathing Under Water: Spirituality & the Twelve Steps. We will then spend time together in silent meditation/contemplation/prayer. We’ll conclude our sessions with time for reflection, sharing, and conversation. All are welcome.

Week One's class closed with the following prayer:

"O Lord, grant me to meet the coming day in peace. Help me in all thing to rely upon Your holy will. In every hour of the day, reveal Your will to me. Bless my dealing with all who surround me. Teach me to treat all that comes to me throughout the day with peace of soul and with firm conviction that Your will governs all. In all my deeds and words, guide my thoughts and feelings. In unforeseen events, let me not forget that all are sent by You. Teach me to act firmly and wisely, without embittering and embarrassing others. Give me strength to bear the fatigue of the coming day with all that it shall bring. Direct my will, teach me to pray, pray You Yourself in me. Amen."

Outreach: Food Pantry Volunteer Opportunity

Our friends at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in the North Valley need help.

Their food pantry, Casa San Miguel, is experiencing nearly double the number of families seeking assistance. While the food pantry can always use money and food donations, they really need people to come help out.

The times are Mondays and Tuesdays, 6:30 – 10:00 on both days. You can work a portion of those times. While there is some lifting (40-pound boxes) involved, there are other jobs which do not require too much manual labor.

Please contact Deacon David (via email here) for more information and to sign up.
