This full-day program will continue our discussion of the history of slavery in New Jersey with presentations on research sources and methods. Sponsored by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, the program will include panels on three topics:

Finding Connections with Africa, including Shazel Muhammad, founder and director of African Link Initiative
Tracing Individual and Family Histories, including Catherine Medich, New Jersey State Archives
Researching Community Histories, including Dr. Christopher Matthews, Montclair State University Anthropology Department, specializing in historical archaeology

The $60 registration includes admission to the Grounds For Sculpture and meals.

SSAAM Volunteer Docent Information Events

The Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum (SSAAM), Central New Jersey’s

first dedicated Black history museum, is seeking volunteer docents for Fall 2023.

Working with SSAAM is an opportunity to gain meaningful hands-on experience at a

historic site and earn service hours. Staff members will provide training and educational resources for docents, so that all volunteers feel empowered to share the unique story of the Sourland Mountain region’s African American community from the time of the trans-Atlantic slave trade to the present day.

Sankofa, a word from the Twi language of Ghana, translates to "go back and get it." It is often depicted by a bird with its body facing forward and its head turned back, holding a precious egg. This and other Sankofa symbols remind us of the importance of learning from the past.
