Archives Exhibit on New York LGBTQ Elected Officials Receives Critical Acclaim.
The LaGuardia and Wagner Archives exhibit A Seat at the Table on LGBTQ elected officials in New York City Council and the State Legislature continues to receive critical acclaim. Following a rave in the literary magazine The Gay & Lesbian Review, the exhibit won praise in The Gotham Center Blog for New York City History. The exhibit, a collaborative effort between the Archives and the college’s commercial photography program, was co-curated by historian Stephen Petrus and Photography Professor Thierry Gourjon-Bieltvedt. LaGuardia students took photographs of the exhibit subjects and helped conduct oral history interviews. A Seat at the Table examines the personal lives and political experiences of elected officials from the 1990s to the present. The exhibit is also a pedagogical tool, meant to be used in both high school and college classrooms. It features three curricula units on New York City LGBTQ history created by Petrus and LaGuardia Professors Juline Koken and Tara Hickman. In this oral history clip, former Queens City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer reflects touchingly about his coming out experience with family.

LaGuardia’s Award-Winning Theater Program Presents Big Love
The award-winning Theater Program at LaGuardia is putting on a production of Big Love, a tragic yet hilarious play that takes the plot of an ancient Greek play into modern times. Tickets are available now for shows running May 17–20 at the Little Theater. Big Love is a tragicomic, modern re-telling of one of the Western world's oldest plays, The Danaids by Aeschylus. It tells the story of 50 brides fleeing arranged marriages to their 50 cousins and seeking refuge in a villa on the coast of Italy. Big Love deals with themes of refugeeism, gender roles, dysfunctional relationships, and ultimately love. It raises questions about the institution of marriage and shows that there are no easy answers to some of life’s biggest problems. LaGuardia students and recent graduates who are part of the Big Love production include crew members D'Amari Brown, Bryan Feliciano, Christian Houston, Morticia Salazar, and Tsumugi Fukuda, and cast members Isaias Aragon, Cheyenne Campbell, Jaden Collins, Viktoriya Gurskaya, Michael Hernandez, Annabelle Paez, Jermaine Parker, Liz Pratt, Jason Rodriguez, Christian Torres, Bambo Coulibaly, Raven Furs, and Isabella Rivera.

Presenters included Ryan Jhin, Accounting; Laredo Regular, Psychology; Jahrena Hodge, Therapeutic Recreation; Wynn Salman, Fine Arts; Mahee Islam, Energy Technician; and Timothy Ramanand (LaGuardia’22, Philosophy), City College. “Our students gave spectacular presentations, with a mix of polished videos, organized PowerPoint presentations, and extemporaneous reflections,” said Dr. Cheri Carr, director of the Philosophy Program (Humanities). “For me, the most memorable moment was when Timothy spontaneously exclaimed ‘I love Philosophy!’ during his presentation on the idea of love and its relationship to madness.” Each presenter was honored with a Chaffee Award of Excellence, named in recognition of Dr. John Chaffee, founder and former director of LaGuardia’s Philosophy program. The conference was organized by Dr. Andrew McFarland (Humanities), Dr. Koun Eum (Social Science), and Dr. Choon Shan Lai (Social Science).
