ELDER OF THE MONTH - Nancy Fennell

SPECIAL NEWS AND INFORMATION

PARABLES

Last week in the lectionary, we studied about the farmer that went out to sow. Jesus told the parable of the sower, the seeds, and the soils to tell us what the Kingdom of Heaven is like. Again, this week, we come to another parable that Jesus tells. And again, this parable is about a farmer that went out and sowed seeds in the field. However, not all the seeds that get planted in this field are wheat. Some are weeds that look like wheat until the final maturation. So join us this week as we explore this new story in order to get a glimpse into what the Kingdom of Heaven looks like and will look like at the end of the age.

Yours in Christ

Brandon

EVERYONE INVITED TO BABY SHOWER

The Fellowship Team cordially invites everyone to a baby shower for Caitlin Bailey Smith on Sunday, July 30th following Morning Worship. This will be the first child for Daniel and Caitlin and the first grandchild of Sherry and Wayne Bailey. The baby boy is due in August. Caitlin is registered through MyRegistry.com and at Target. Light refreshments will be served. Come and join the fun and celebrate this happy event.

MEET THE MOUNTAINS FESTIVAL IN AUGUST

The Meet The Mountains Festival will be held in Johnson City at Winged Deer Park on August 18-19. This festival serves as a showcase of Northeast Tennessee’s outdoor recreation assets. And this year, we are having our own Watauga Avenue Presbyterian Church booth at this festival. We want people in the community to become aware of our mission and values towards sustainability, creation care, and love for God’s earth. During this festival, we will be distributing native wildflower seed packets with information about our church and our Green Team. We look forward to a lot of fun!

There are several lists on the bulletin board in the side entrance. Please indicate if you can help with filling seed packets on Sunday, August 6, after worship; or if you can fill a 3 hour timeslot to man our booth at the Festival on Friday, August 18 and/or Saturday, August 19. If you would like a tee shirt, please add your name to the list and the size(s) you want. Thanks.

A BLAST FROM THE PAST

This is Thomas and Mary Abraham on their last visit to see us

in June 2019. We continue to wish them much happiness.

GREEN SPACE NEWS

An environmental activist, retired engineer, and Ely Shoshone tribal elder, Delaine Spilsbury made headlines in 2020 for her role in a long fight against a pipeline that would drain groundwater and rivers in rural Nevada where she lives in order to supply water to Las Vegas. Spilsbury is on the board of a coalition called the Great Basin Water Network that has worked for decades to protect the regional water supply. In May, 2020, after 31 years of organizing, lobbying politicians, and tying up the water authority in legal battles, Spilsbury and the Great Basin Water Network prevailed: the court found in their favor, and the water authority declined to appeal.

"I'm a member of the native people—the Newe—who have been in this area for 10,000 years," she says. "What I would advise people facing similar struggles is: don't give up the ship. You don't take no for an answer when you know that yea is so much better." Although she and the Great Basin Water Network have won their battle for water rights for now, Spilsbury is still in the fight opposing a plan for another ill-conceived pipeline through the desert, one that would be used by a small number of residents. Spilsbury says she'll keep working to protect Newe land and water as long as she can and, she adds, "making trouble for the water hogs."   (GSN #157)

VIRTUAL CREATION ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK

CHAMADA DIAMANTINA NATIONAL PARK, BAHIA, BRAZIL

One World Productions

(March 2016 | 3:41 min.)

The Chapada Diamantina National Park (could be translated as the Diamond Highlands)  is located in the center of Bahia state, at 420Km from Salvador, in a 38.000Km2 area, larger than countries like Holland, Belgium or Israel. The region became famous during the 19th century for the Diamond exploration, that lasted until 1990, when the National Park was finally founded, considered today one of the most beautiful National Parks in Brazil.

The area offers an impressive variety of ecosytems, from rain forests to “cerrado” (a typical dry land from the northwestern part of Brazil), wildlife and flora along with the countless valleys, canyons, waterfalls, limestone caves, natural pools with blue-crystal water and even a small swampland.

Earth Prayers: From Around the World, 365 Prayers, Poems, and Invocations for Honoring the Earth

By Elizabeth Roberts & Elias Amidon

(291.2 EAR)

In forest clearings, beneath star-filled skies, in cathedrals, and before the hearth...women and men have always given voice to the impulse to celebrate the world that surrounds and sustains them. Now, as we face a diminished present and an uncertain future, the need to honor the interconnection between people and the planet is heightened.

From Walt Whitman, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Black Elk, to Margaret Atwood, the Rig Veda, and the chant of a Samar fisherman, the varied voices linked here offer songs and prayers for land, sea, and air; graces for food; and invocations, poems, and passages that reveal in the common spiritual heritage of all who cherish creation.
