President's Message
Cere Fingerhut
Last week, we picked our youngest up from her first-ever week away from us at BB Camp. After watching her hug her new friends goodbye and giving her all the hugs and kisses we were saving up during the week we asked what camp was like? Her report: “We have to go to Israel,” and, “there was A LOT of dancing.” She continued to emphasize the dancing to her big sister who we dropped off a couple days later for two weeks at camp. She’s there now and I am hoping she is dancing her heart out every day.
We as a family love to dance. I was in my 20s during the time when big band music was featured in modern music. In the clubs I frequented, the West Coast Swing was huge and other ballroom steps were familiar to all in the club. It was the foundation for shows like Dancing with the Stars to appeal to us at a commercially-viable level. Dancing with a strong lead to great music is one of my most deeply joyful experiences.
I had a few good friends who competed on the dance competition circuit. As someone who danced just for fun, I was frequently distracted by how to move around the floor when there was a crush of people already on it. A piece of advice one friend offered was, “You get as much room on the dance floor as you take up.” It is a fascinating phenomenon to experience the truth of this statement. The way space is made for an elaborate step combination at just the right time. My friend was right. Not just on the dance floor but in so many places—space gets made as we move into it.
As I consider the programming Temple Beth Tikvah has planned for the year, I think about what your calendars look like. I know that many of our calendars regularly look like the dance floor on a Friday or Saturday night at the busiest clubs. I am confident that in September space opens up for the “elaborate step combinations” that are our peoples’ High Holy Day celebrations.
My hope is that you make space to dance in our community more regularly throughout the year. Not just the big, elaborate numbers but the smaller, just-as-satisfying ones.
After our HHD celebrations, led by Rabbi Johanna, we’ll be celebrating Erev Shabbat with song leader Kim Schneiderman, once a month. Our Moral Courage group offers adult learning, discussing current events and controversial topics on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month. Vindaloo with the Jews continues to bring us together on the third Sunday of each month, while the Ladies’ Lunch has returned for a monthly mid-week nosh. Our youth are laughing and learning together in the community school throughout the winter months while our teens are fanning the flames of a nascent youth group. We’re anticipating a Mitzvah Madness Day and TBT congregants are actively engaging in Tikkun Olam at Family Kitchen one Wednesday a month. Details of these and so many other opportunities will continue to arrive on our website and in your mailboxes on Wednesdays in the Weekly Happenings.
My daughter is right: there is A LOT of dancing. I can’t wait to see you out on the floor!
L’Shalom,
Cere

Calling all Ladies Who Lunch
Weigh in on our next events....
|
TBT had our first Post-COVID Ladies Lunch on Wednesday, June 28 at Black Steer Restaurant in Bend. The six attendees were glad to be able to reengage with each other and share in conversation and cuisine again. A second lunch was held with 11 women on July 19 at The Phoenix.
Terry Reynolds and Susan Lazarus have been researching restaurant options to see which ones would take reservations, especially as the group grows.
Terry would like to survey all TBT women about future lunches and what day/time/location to meet. Please send an email to Terry at tlrsboard@yahoo.com answering these six questions:
1. What day or days of the week work best for you?
2. What time for lunch? 11:30, noon, 12:30 etc
3. Are you willing to meet in Redmond? (Need to research restaurants) (Carpooling?)
4. Are you willing to meet in Sunriver? (Need to research restaurants) (Carpooling?)
5. Are you willing to meet in Sisters? (Need to research restaurants) (Carpooling?)
6. Would you be willing take a leadership role as we rotate who takes responsibility to secure a restaurant each month?

TBT has a Bikur Cholim committee or “The Care and Feeding of our Jewish Community.”
Historically, committee members have organized Meal Trains for those recovering from illness or surgery or following the birth of a new baby. Meals have been delivered to Hospice House for families with loved ones in Hospice care. Rides to medical appointments and physical therapy have been provided.
The committee has added some new members and reorganized to help our growing TBT community. If you, or someone you know, need help following surgery or due to an illness, please contact Suzanne Schlosberg, schlos1@gmail.com, Evie Lerner, evielerner60@gmail.com, or Ari Halpern, aridhalpern@yahoo.com. An email will be sent to TBT members requesting meals, transportation or visits based on individual needs.
Linda Brant, lindybrant@aol.com is in charge of needs for a single day such as a ride to a medical test or appointment. She is in the process of establishing a list of volunteers willing to help out. If interested in helping, please reach out to Linda.
Micah Slate, micahaslate@gmail.com is our first teen member of the committee. If you have a teen who would be interested in helping Micah, please let him know.
And, please, if you need assistance from our community, do not hesitate to ask.

Social Action Update

TBT’s Family Kitchen Crew rocks! The June Wednesday crew from the early shift was ready to depart as the second shift crew arrived! Sandwiches and salads were made; coffee and desserts were ready to serve; everything was in place for preparing the to-go boxes. And the kitchen area was cleaned just in time for the lunch service to begin!
Part of what made this crew so incredible in getting the jobs done, was the number of people who volunteered. There were 7 of us working on each of the shifts. Up until now, we’ve been working with only 6 per shift – amazing what the addition of one more person means for our accomplishment!
Going forward we plan to have at least seven people signed up for each shift. So, if you’d like to join us in the Kitchen, please email Jeanne Freeman at jgfree925@gmail.com and she’ll put you on the volunteer list.
If you have a volunteer project close to your heart that you’d like to spearhead – whether a one-time event or regular commitment – give Jeanne Freeman a call or email her at jgfree925@gmail.com and she’ll be happy to give you a hand getting the program going.
During the pandemic our social action efforts, which are an integral part of our TBT activities, came to a halt. We are making every effort to bring social action back into TBT’s activities. Thank you all so very much, your participation helps make that happen.

Cascade Theatrical's Production of Parade
Running Through August 6
|
Amid religious intolerance, political injustice and racial tension, the stirring Tony Award-winning Parade explores the endurance of love and hope against all the odds. With a book by acclaimed playwright Alfred Uhry (Driving Miss Daisy) and a rousing, colorful and haunting score by Jason Robert Brown (Songs For a New World, The Last Five Years, Bridges of Madison County), Parade is a moving examination of the darkest corners of America’s history.
In 1913, Leo Frank, a Brooklyn-raised Jew living in Georgia, is put on trial for the murder of thirteen-year-old Mary Phagan, a factory worker under his employ. Already guilty in the eyes of everyone around him, a sensationalist publisher and a janitor’s false testimony seal Leo’s fate. His only defenders are a governor with a conscience and, eventually, his assimilated Southern wife who finds the strength and love to become his greatest champion.
Daring, innovative and bold, Parade is filled with soaring music and a heart-wrenching story, offering a moral lesson about the dangers of prejudice and ignorance that should not be forgotten.

About Temple Beth Tikvah
For Jewish families, retirees and singles at every level of faith in Central Oregon, Temple Beth Tikvah provides a comforting embrace for the soul of your DNA. We are a dynamic Reform Jewish congregation with friendly, giving, active people drawn to Bend and Central Oregon because of the active lifestyle we find here.
We come together in different ways, inspired and informed by our common thread of Jewishness. Whether you were born Jewish, love someone who is Jewish or choose to be Jewish. Practice Judaism a little, a lot or not at all. TBT can serve as the heart of your vibrant, connected life.
We can be your primary source of friendship, purpose, spiritual and intellectual pursuit. Or a side note adding flavor and dimension how and when you want. Whichever you choose, TBT offers an inclusive, communal foundation on which to build your relationships, experiences and practice. From social activities to social action, worship to study, participation to leadership. It's your choice, in this community of yours.
