NOTES FROM THE DIOCESAN OFFICES

David Fremo ♦ (320) 251-0111

Catholic Schools – Summer brings time for reflection and recharging for our Catholic school communities. We celebrate the joys and accomplishments of the year behind us and look forward to that next “first day” of school. For so many educators, the drive to keep moving and doing is insatiable. It’s important for us to remember that the space between one year and the next has great purpose and beauty in our work. Of course, we do slow down and breathe deeply and take in that precious time. Consider it holy time; as the Gospel of Matthew reminds us, Jesus calls us to rest in him with our burdens and worries (11:28-30). So let us take this time of rest!

I recently discovered this short poem, which was used at a preschool “graduation.” It seems appropriate for any age!

You’re a very special person,

And I wanted you to know,

How much I enjoyed being your teacher.

How fast the years did go!

Please come back to visit me

As through the grades you grow,

Try hard to learn all that you can

There is so much to know!

The one thing I tried to teach you

To last your whole life through,

Is to know that you are SPECIAL

There is no one else like you!

If you need a sheet with the weekend dates, contact the Planning Office and we will send you one. We will again use an online format to submit the Mass count numbers in August. Meal and family-friendly activities to follow Mass. The event is free.

A reminder that the Rural Business Award nominations are/were due on June 1. If you still have a Catholic business owner in your rural community who you would like to nominate, do so as soon as possible online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ruralbusinessnomination or email [email protected].

Visit the page here: https://stcdio.org/mental-health-ministry/.

June is the end of the audit year for safe environment. Please check to make sure all the staff and volunteers of your school or parish have training and background checks that are up to date. I will be archiving any expired accounts on June 30. This means that no one can volunteer or work with children or youth until they complete the training and a background check.  I may be reaching out to some parishes and schools to make sure the children and youth training was completed.  I appreciate all the quick responses I received from parishes and schools with trying to get their sites up to date. Any questions feel free to call or email [email protected] or 320-251-2340.

Anna Kampa ♦ (320) 258-7654

Stewardship – The diocesan Stewardship Advisory Council exists to provide a foundation for developing stewardship as a living expression of Christian discipleship within our diocese, our Area Catholic Communities, and our parishes.

If you have any questions or have suggestions about how the council can support your parish/ACC stewardship efforts, please contact Anna Kampa at [email protected] or 320-258-7654.

Bishop’s Annual Appeal – As of May 23, the Bishop’s Annual Appeal for 2023 has raised total cash and pledges of $1,006,642 toward our goal of $1,400,000 (71.9%). This was made possible through the generous donations of 5,444 people throughout the 16 counties of our diocese.

Parish/School Distributions – The Office of Stewardship and Development is currently in the process of collecting Catholic school enrollment surveys and will distribute funds in June to parishes and the two high schools in the diocese.  We ask that pastors keep an eye out for the arrival of these checks. An email will be sent to alert you when they are mailed.

Fr. Virgil Helmin ♦ (320) 251-6557

The work of the Tribunal has continued throughout these months – but with the inability to meet in person with clients we have made several adjustments to meet the needs of the people. In this process the staff has chosen to make some adjustments to the annulment process.

The adjustments are as follows:

  • The documents required are the same for each annulment process and are:
  1. baptismal certificates for both principals;
  2. marriage certificate
  3. divorce decree

  • For the formal annulment process, the petitioner can submit the completed form (Formal Petition (PDF) or Formal Petition (DOC)) and a narrative –or– participate in a telephone interview –or– appear in person at the Tribunal Office for a scheduled appointment.

  • In the formal process, hearing the witnesses will not have to be in person at the Tribunal. The witnesses will be contacted by phone and the petitioner will assure the availability of the witnesses for a phone interview at a time designated by the Tribunal.

If you are uncertain about the annulment process or any have other questions, you can contact the Tribunal Office at (320) 251-6557 or email [email protected][email protected][email protected] or [email protected].

Bridge-Builders for a Thriving Mission

We are the Ones: Transformation for a Thriving Ministry—A Retreat for Lay Ecclesial Ministers – Despite the strain of the coronavirus pandemic, the opportunity to change meaningfully is all around us. This phrase “We are the Ones We Have Been Waiting For” holds a spirit and timeliness for the ministerial work of lay ecclesial ministers. It was first introduced by Jamaican American activist, teacher and poet June Jordan in her poem for Women in South Africa (1978) and then again in a letter the Elders of the HOPI Nation of Oraibi, Arizona (2000). Based on Jordan’s earlier work, her poem inspires hope and long vision.

In this second annual retreat for lay ecclesial ministers, we will explore these meaningful questions:

  • Why does learning to work across differences sustain a healthy ministerial workplace?
  • How does the practice of contemplation transform one’s spiritual life and ministry?
  • In what ways can a covenant-based ministry put soul into leadership and workplace culture?
  • Who will we become as we renew our vocation to ministry?

Schedule: More details will be sent as we get closer, but the retreat will begin at 9:30 am on Tuesday, July 25 and conclude with lunch on Friday, July 28. Retreat will be held at Saint John's University

Cost: This retreat is significantly underwritten by the Klimoski Endowment at Saint John’s School of Theology and Seminary established to advance lay ecclesial ministry. Each retreatant is asked to contribute $50 for the retreat. The remaining cost of $350 per person for housing, food, and other related costs is covered by the endowment. Scholarships are available if necessary.

Registration: Register online today using this link, https://www.csbsju.edu/forms/26I2DPZ7WL

Our greatest needs for volunteers are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons and evenings. Volunteers are at the heart of changing lives and making the world a better place. Whether you have only hours to spare or can commit to volunteer once a week, Catholic Charities has volunteer opportunities to help you give back to your community. To learn about volunteering at Catholic Charities and how you can positively impact the lives of people in Central Minnesota, go to ccstcloud.org/volunteer.
