The Land is Our Lifeline

Your support is key to ensuring the completion of the 22 active land conservation projects, totaling 1,200 acres (that’s the size of Central Park in NYC)!

Since 1958, Heritage Conservancy has worked to protect more than 16,000 acres of the most beautiful and important lands in our region. From forests and stream valleys to meadows and farmlands, each preserved property helps to exemplify the unique character of this region; their permanent conservation supports the quality of life and character of the community. Bristol Teacher Follow-Up Visit at Croydon Woods Preserve

Christine Schrack, an Elementary Teacher of Gifted and Talented Students in the Bristol Township School District, followed up with us after our teacher event to share that she took some students out to Croydon Woods Preserve.

“I wanted to thank you for taking the time to walk the Keystone teachers through Croydon Woods this week. I was so inspired that I took a group of third and fourth-graders out today. We're reading a book by C.S. Lewis that talks about ‘The Wood Between the Worlds.’ We read some of the novel in the woods, and then wrote using descriptive language based on our 5 senses. We also walked around looking for inspiration for future writing pieces (examples: Who might live in that burrow? Why is this log soft....could it be a portal? Could it be quicksand?).”

Christine shared that her students expressed their excitement in going out to the woods to learn, and after our teachers event, she had the ability to educate them. Croydon woods can now not only serve as an educational spot for teachers, but also as an exciting and imaginative learning ground for young students.

Maintaining the quality of our preserved properties is of the utmost importance to Heritage Conservancy. We believe preservation inherently involves care and maintenance to be considered environmentally friendly.

Recently our Conservation Easement Stewards Katie Toner and Sebastian Harris have replaced old, worn, and damaged signs on some of our preserved properties. These properties are located in Bedminster, Buckingham, Columcille Megalith Park, Upper Southampton, Northampton, and Wrightstown. While some of the properties are publicly accessible, please note that others are private.

The Columcille Megalith Park (which is publicly accessible), in particular, has struck us as having a unique history, with its impressive megaliths and Celtic-inspired outdoor sanctuary.

Columcille Megalith Park

The park features more than 90 stones that have been purposefully placed around the park, which spans more than 20 acres. This park has a very pristine and biodiverse woodland, which is protected by a conservation easement recorded back in 1997. For more information, visit their website.

It’s important to us that we commit to local land and uphold its maintenance - even two decades later. Click here to learn more about our conservation efforts.

The Marshall Historic Preservation Fund

The Marshall Historic Preservation Fund, named in honor of Heritage Conservancy's past President Jeff Marshall, is helping to ensure that Heritage Conservancy maintains its leadership role as a resource for historic preservation in our region.

Through your support of the Fund, you are part of this continuing work to maintain the character of our community - thank you! Read more...

Testimonial

"When we decided to get married in 2018 after 20 years together, we needed nothing in the way of wedding gifts, so we asked guests to make gifts to their choice of three charities in Bucks County that are doing work that is important to us. Heritage Conservancy was one of those options. As two people who grew up in urban environments, we have reveled in the beauty of Bucks County for the past 25 years. Too often, we find ourselves driving through the countryside, seeing new developments, and lamenting about the farmland that used to be there or the beautiful barn that is no longer standing. Heritage Conservancy is doing important work preserving open space and historic structures, and we are honored to be part of their efforts.

When we moved into our home in Doylestown, we wanted to learn more about the history of the place where we were now living. The President at the time, Jeff Marshall, provided us with a detailed background, thus beginning our formal introduction to Heritage Conservancy. Since then, we have learned about Bucks County barns via Jeff’s talks and publications. We were also introduced to the heron rookery in the Quakertown Swamp by Heritage Conservancy’s Land Conservation Manager; what a wonderful surprise to see that!

We look forward to becoming more involved with the Conservancy in the coming years and supporting the preservation of our beautiful Bucks County."
