Mercer Juniors vying for National Teams

Photo above: 2022 World Rowing U19 Championship Women's 8+ with Mercer Rower Eugenia Rodriguez-Vazquez in bow.

This year two current Mercer Juniors were invited to the U19 US National Team Selection Camp and two Mercer Alumni were invited to the U23 US National Team Selection Camp.

Rower Ashley Rohloff and coxswain Gabrielle Zammit are working to earn positions on the team that will represent the United States at the U19 World Rowing Championship in Paris, France in early August. This year's U19 Championship will also serve as the test event to make sure everything at the Paris venue is ready for next year's 2024 Paris Olympics.

Mercer Alumni Julian Thomas and Morgan Linsley were invited to try for the U23 World Rowing Championship team. The 2023 U23 World Rowing Championship will take place beginning July 19th in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Both Morgan and Julian represented the USA as part of the U19 team in the past with Julian winning gold in the M8+ in 2021 and Morgan finishing fourth in the W4+ at the 2019 World Rowing Championships. Morgan is currently a student at Duke University and Julian studies at Dartmouth College.

Good luck to all of our rowers on the World stage.

A Summer Day at the Capsersen Rowing Center

Summer, a time for calm water, relaxing and . . . if you thought things slowed down during the summer at the Caspersen Rowing Center, then you may be surprised. The following is a brief summary of a summer day:

5:00am - 7:00am The day begins with the Mercer Masters, Mercer U23 and Mercer Junior Boys taking to the water as the sun is rising over Mercer Lake. Nearly 100 rowers make time on the water part of their morning routine. The Mercer Masters include both competitive and recreational rowing groups. The Mercer U23 program is designed for college students who want to continue to develop their rowing during the summer.

7:00am-11:30am The National Team takes over the rowing course on the Lake. This year the majority of the Senior Team is utilizing Caspersen with the selection camps for the Para PR3 Mixed 4+ in early June and from mid-June the selection camps for the Senior W8+, M8+ W4-, M4-, W4x, M4x in addition to the LW2x, LW2- and W2x. With this year's Senior World Championship providing the first opportunity to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics, the activities have added intensity.

During this time slot we also have the Junior Learn to Row Camp where we introduce 56 new junior athletes to the sport of rowing in each week long camp.

The Mercer 'Barge Warriors' also head out 2 times a week to enjoy the lake in the mid-morning hours.

1:00pm-3:00pm The Mercer Juniors are back on the water with the girls team taking over. The Mercer Junior Summer Program includes Mercer, Hun, Lawrenceville and Peddie rowers.

3:00pm-6:00pm The National Teams return for their second round of practices on Mercer Lake.

6:00pm-8:00pm The programing changes over to focus on our Adult Summer Rowing League and Adult Learn to Row. After several years of low attendance due to COVID, the interest in the Summer program has picked up with a range of people from those taking their first strokes to experienced rowers looking for an opportunity to enjoy time on the lake. There are also some U23 athletes heading out in small boats for a spin on the Lake.

While some people celebrate the lazy days of summer, at the Caspersen Rowing Center, rowers are taking advantage of the longer days and flat water to stay active.
