Featured Volunteer
My name is Dr. Roger Barth. I tutor chemistry and math, mostly to YMWIC Scholars in grades 9 through 12.

I attended public schools in Bucks County (Neshaminy High School) and left high school a year early to attend La Salle College (now La Salle University) in Philadelphia. In my third college year, I studied at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel. After graduating from La Salle, I enrolled as a graduate student at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. I was awarded a master’s and doctoral degree from Johns Hopkins. As an undergraduate, I was a chemistry major. In my post-graduate studies, I specialized in physical chemistry, which is one of the five chemistry subdisciplines (the others are analytical chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, and organic chemistry). My Ph.D. thesis was about catalysts. Read more.

Workshops
Workshop 15:
All Chapters gathered together at YMWIC Headquarters for Workshop 15, where we had special guests with important messages on deck to address two groups. The first group, comprised of 3rd through 10th grade Scholars, participated in a lively and interactive conversation about Bullying and Cyber Bullying with Jimmy White, IV, Complex Director of Engineering for the W and Element Philadelphia Hotels. He also holds the titles of Professional Speaker, Award-winning Youth and Veteran Advocate, Minister, Husband and Father, and George W. Bush Center Presidential Scholar.

Mr. White created a great rapport with more than 50 Scholars sharing his own stories about being bullied when he was a young student. He taught them valuable lessons about multiple bullying-related topics including the spreading of rumors and how untrue and hurtful they can be, turning their peers who are not nice to them into their "frenemies," the permanence of negative postings on social media, and standing up to bullies.

Scholars enjoyed taking part in conversations, skits and activities, and learned about appropriate and proportionate responses they can make to bullies and how to be there for their friends who are experiencing bullying. These poignant lessons will stick with Scholars for years to come.
At the same time, 11th and 12th grade Scholars along with all parents and guardians in attendance were in the 2nd Floor Conference Room receiving valuable information about the importance of our Mental Health in an informative presentation facilitated by Dr. Ebonnie Vazquez, Ph.D. and MSW. Dr. Vazquez is a co-facilitator and trainer for Insight Resources, which is a company that offers an array of training including Diversity, Mental Health, De-Escalation, and Team Building. She currently teaches undergraduate social work at West Chester University. Accompanying her was Mrs. Sandra Simmons, CEO of Insight Resources. Read more.
Community Service
Chester Upland Chapter
On Sunday, April 30, the Chester Upland Chapter of YMWIC assisted the Boys & Girls Club of Chester, PA, in cleaning their outdoor shed and rearranging their furniture inside. Although it was raining, the Scholars’ faces shone as they carried furniture inside to the Main Hall and reconfigured the space. They then assisted in breaking down chairs and clearing decorations from the gymnasium. Finally, they helped carry supplies out to the club’s vans once the gym was reset. All of the Scholars did a wonderful job helping this day and their efforts were greatly appreciated by the Boys & Girls Club staff.

Phoenixville Chapter
For their fourth Community Service event on May 4, 2023, the Phoenixville Chapter of YMWIC partnered with Trellis for Tomorrow, a Gardening Management Program that provides fresh fruit, vegetables, and meals to neighbors in need. Read more.

Recognizing and Accepting People with Autism
by Kimora White – Norristown Chapter

In April, we recognized “Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month.” Autism was identified only 83 years ago, making it one of the newer disabilities. Although new, autism is one of the fastest growing disabilities among children in the United States. As time advances, we discover more and more about this disability.

What is autism? Well, autism (also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD) is a condition that is caused during brain development. People with autism often have problems with social interactions. They can have limited abilities when it comes to behavior and socializing, depending where they are on the spectrum. Read more.
Why I am Running for DECA President
By Dayanis Morales-Salgado – Norristown Chapter

The 2022-2023 school year has been my first year being a part of DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America), and I have grown to love it. You don't pick DECA; DECA picks you. Then, before you know it, you somehow end up at Disney World hanging out with all your friends and enjoying adolescence. But, of course, before you get to that stage, you need to go through a series of competitions and need a leader to help you achieve that. As a potential candidate for this position, I want to be able to improve the DECA experience to everyone and together be able to #ExperienceTheDifference. Read more.
Alumni Update
As a departure from the norm, this year's YMWIC Scholarship & Awards Banquet honored one of our own Alumni, Dulce Juarez Barrera, a first-generation Cum Laude college graduate, as our Keynote Speaker. Dulce graciously accepted our invitation and had an inspiring and encouraging message for current YMWIC Scholars.

Dulce, born in Mexico and raised in West Chester, PA, graduated from West Chester East High School and TCHS B (Technical College High School Brandywine) in 2020 where she was very involved in academic clubs, honors society, and community organizations like YMWIC. Read more.
Parent Spotlight
This month, we feature Sarah Smith, mother of Addilyn Smith, a member of our Phoenixville Chapter. The family joined YMWIC this Program Year. One reason for joining was that Addilyn (Addi) was intrigued by the Program. Sarah has noticed, since becoming a member, Addi is more confident and shows leadership potential. When we asked her what they both enjoy about the Program, her response was, "Everything, but mostly the people!"

Sarah and Addi have taken part in Community Service events with their Chapter and enjoy giving back to the community. When asked what she would say to other families who are considering YMWIC, Sarah says, "Come see what we're about! I dare you not to like it!"
