JSL honors our hard working and devoted staff on Labor Day and every day. On Monday, September 4, we acknowledge 300 employees whose work continues to support the residents and staff of Jewish Senior Life. As a nation, we have been commemorating Labor Day since 1894, when President Grover Cleveland pronounced Labor Day as a federal holiday after attempts to end a railroad strike. This 129-year history reminds us of the importance of labor rights, not just the importance of work. The first Monday of September, Labor Day is "A Shabbat for Us All," said Sarah Greenberg, the former assistant legislative director at the Religious Action Center of reform Judaism.

VIEW THE NOMINATION FORM

FRIENDS

From what I’ve heard, Hellen Mirren should get an Oscar nomination for her star turn as Golda. What better way to see her than with the whole JSL mishpacha. Join us at the Maple Theater on Wednesday, September 6 for an exclusive JSL matinee at 2pm. Tickets are $8 and include popcorn.

Lives Well Lived: Wrinkles in Time

This is going to be a very special year for Lives Well Lived. Not only will we be releasing “Don’t Write Me Off,” a book of short essays by our residents, but we will also provide space on the website for our sponsors to tell their business and family stories. The culmination of this festival of storytelling will be On Tuesday, November 14 at 7pm. After a nosh and a chance to meet our resident writers, we will commemorate Oscar-winning documentarian Sue Marx, and screen her film “Young at Heart.” For more information, tickets and to become a Lives Well Lived sponsor, please visit https://jslmi.org/events/jsls-lives-well-lived/.

Volunteers

If you or someone you know is a member of a group looking for volunteer opportunities, in addition to individual volunteers, we are dedicated to engaging senior with the wider community and have lots of great openings. We’ll be happy to build an activity that’s perfect for your group and our residents. Please call or email me at 248 592-5062 / brobinson@jslmi.org.

JSL SEPTEMBER HAPPENINGS

FALL

FASHION SHOWS

Wowee, wowee, were our Meer models a bunch of red-hot mommas! We had a full house for our first post-Covid fashion show and almost sold out our fall fashions afterward! So many people contributed to this event. The volunteers, the models, and the staff, all worked incredibly hard, from unpacking and pricing items to ensuring that all the models were dressed, accessorized, and accompanied down the runway, to managing the post-show sale. Whenever we do an event like this, the entire JSL family, volunteers, residents, staff, family and friends, finds a way to make a meaningful contribution. It was a fun and exciting day and we’re doing it again next week!

Fleischman Fall Fashion Show

If you missed the Meer show, come on out to Fleischman on Thursday, September 7 at 1:00pm for cookies, coffee, glorious fall fashions, and lots of fun.

FRIDAY FUNNY

SHABBAT SHALOM

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain

The Ups and Downs of Life

Once, when a wealthy individual visited his spiritual mentor, the mentor quoted words of wisdom, “The world is a turning wheel,” and added, “although a wheel is round, there is still a top and a bottom.”

The mentor continued to teach a lesson about the Ferris Wheel. In the central garden of Vienna, a large Ferris Wheel stands above the town. On its sides hang glass wagons with metal trim so the riders are able to see from all angles. When the wagon is lifted off the ground, the rider is also lifted. And when the rider reaches the highest point, they are able to see very far. The wheel turns and the wagons descend and continue to send the riders up and down.

There is a time when the rider surges to the top, and there is a time when the rider drops down to the bottom.

The nature of man is that when we are on top, we feel uplifted, and joy filled. When we are, G‑d forbid, on the bottom, we may feel sadness and bitterly weep with a heavy heart.

When we are low and weeping out of sadness, we must ask ourselves, “Why are you crying? It is only a wheel, and a wheel’s nature is to turn. With G‑d’s help you will be helped.” When we find ourselves on top of the world, we can feel exalted but should also ask ourselves, “Why are we so excited? It is only a wheel and a wheel’s nature is to turn.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
