Photofeature: Lassen Volcanoes Host Eastern Sierra Splashdown Swim Meet

A SusanvilleStuff photo feature

Lassen Volcanoes, Susanville’s competitive swim team, hosted the Eastern Sierra Splashdown June 29th at the Honey Lake Valley Community Pool, with local swimmers taking on competitors from Quincy and Portola.

The team was coming off an event in the valley where they placed third, returning for their last home meet to take on the Plumas Rapids and the Portola Penguins.

“Overall the event went over amazingly!” says Volcanoes VP Lily Gaumont. “Our silent auction and concessions were a great success! Kona ice was also there for us as a fundraiser.”

This week the Volcanoes swimmers will be headed to Quincy for a meet, followed by a trip to Weaverville on July 21st.

On July 28th the team will take part in the NVAL Championships in Redding.

Snapshots Gallery: 2023 Paul Bunyan Days Festival Parade

A SusanvilleStuff Photofeature

by Marshel and Jeremy Couso

The residents of Westwood, Lassen County’s colorful little lumber town, celebrated their logging heritage with the annual Paul Bunyan Days Festival held this year on July 1st. The event is organized by the Westwood Area Chamber of Commerce and included a street dance, live blues acts, a logging competition, a 5k run and a parade.

The name of the festival comes from the giant woodsman Paul Bunyan who, along with his big blue ox Babe, roamed the Lassen forests around Westwood during the heyday of the Red River Lumber.

Bunyan and the folk-tale legends from the forest became mascots for the lumber company.

Susanville Store Hit by Burglars

July 14, 1950

Office of the Miller’s Market on lower Main Street was robbed of over $3,100 sometime Friday night.

Using a ladder left by workmen the day before when they were installing coolers, the thieves entered the store by cutting a 12 x 14-inch hole in the roof. The ladder was left leaning against the rear of the building.

Most of the money taken was in the form of payroll checks from Lassen Lumber and Box Co., Paul Bunyan Lumber Co., and Fruit Growers Supply Co. These checks were endorsed for deposit only so will be of no use to the burglars. Only $414 of the money was in cash.

Manager Al Swinney, Ray Miller and Don Kernan were first to discover the robbery about 8:30 Saturday morning. Mr. Miller is the new owner of the market, which is one of a chain supervised by Mr. Kernan. Mr. Miller’s home is in Chico, but he was in town that day.

Mr. Swinney believes the thief was someone who knew a great deal about the building in view of the way in which he entered. The intruder apparently left by the way he entered as there were no doors or windows opened.
