LaGuardia Receives $350,000 from New York State to Install Offshore Wind Training Tower and Expand Training in Renewable Energy and Construction
LaGuardia has been awarded $350,000 from the New York State Office of Strategic Workforce Development/ Empire State Development to expand job training for unemployed and underemployed New Yorkers in renewable energy and construction. The grant will enable LaGuardia to install an Offshore Wind Training Tower on the grounds of the campus and to convert under-utilized space in the basement level of Shenker Hall (the M building) into new electrical, plumbing, and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) training labs. Currently, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC training programs are operated off-campus. With expanded, on-campus training facilities, waitlists will be reduced or eliminated; students will be exposed to more tools and equipment and have more opportunities to practice hands-on skills; and new day, evening, and weekend classes will be introduced. Additionally, being on-campus will give students convenient access to LaGuardia’s extensive student support services, e.g., LaGuardia CARES.

Casa de las Américas Marks First Anniversary at LaGuardia
On Friday, July 7, a celebration marked the first anniversary of LaGuardia’s Casa de las Américas, a first-of-its-kind center within CUNY dedicated to highlighting and showcasing the rich and varied traditions and history of the people of Hispanic and Latin Heritage from all countries of the Americas. It was approved by the CUNY Board of Trustees on June 27, 2022. La Casa was developed by a group of dedicated faculty and staff, with support from President Kenneth Adams. Highlights included a mural designed and created by La Casa Art Student Fellows, and monthly Support Circles for First-Generation College Students run by La Casa Student Ambassadors. Since its launch, La Casa has been under the direction of Dr. Ryan Mann-Hamilton (Social Sciences) and Dr. Sonia Alejandra Rodríguez (English), with support from office manager Stefania Gonzalez. Job Opportunity: Film Production Training
LaGuardia’s Division of Adult and Continuing Education (ACE) is seeking a program manager for the new Film Production Training program offered in partnership with IATSE Local 52 Motion Picture Studio Mechanics. The goal of the program is to train students for entry-level jobs in film and television production, in high-demand crafts like Grip, Shop Craft, and Electrical. Apply Here.
HRAssist – LaGuardia’s New Automated Time & Leave System/Attendance Tracker
The Human Resources Department is in the process of launching HRAssist, the new automated time and leave system/attendance tracker for all full-time employees. HRAssist will replace the manual paper process used for full-time employees. The implementation and utilization of HRAssist will significantly improve timekeeping and compliance efficiencies across the College. Notably, eight other CUNY campuses and Central Office are currently using HRAssist.
HRAssist Benefits include:
- Dedicated HR portal uses a database to save time and leave information and employee timesheets.
- Single solution allows centralizing HR data, i.e., employee attendance, scheduling, leave requests, etc.
- Improves transparency of time and leave management for managers and employees.
- Electronic tracking of accruals/leave balances reduces errors in balances and payroll entries.
- Electronic notification of leave requests and approvals for faster responses.
Training
- Since HRAssist will be necessary for use by all full-time employees and paper time sheets will not be accepted after the go-live dates, training will be conducted in two phases. First, HR will provide comprehensive training to departmental supervisors and managers, e.g., those who oversee full-time staff. Second, supervisors and managers will be responsible for training their full-time staff.
Launch Dates
- HR is aiming for HRAssist to go live and be available for use Sunday, August 6 for all Civil Service full-time employees and Sunday, August 13 for PSC, Classified Managerial, and ECP full-time employees.
Next Steps
- Please look out for future HR emails and Campus Update notifications which will provide you with more information about HRAssist, including the schedule of training sessions for supervisors and managers, and the availability of a comprehensive HRAssist website page featuring user manuals, how-to videos, FAQs, and much more.

Reporting Technology Issues and Spam Emails
Technology Issues
Having to rely heavily on technology daily, it’s likely that we will encounter a technology-related issue. Whenever you have any technology-related problems, whether it’s with apps like CUNYfirst, Outlook, or the Faculty & Staff Portal, etc., or with any network services or computer equipment, the fastest and best way to get help is to contact the IT HelpDesk by opening a ticket through the Faculty & Staff Portal https://fsp.laguardia.edu, or by calling 718-482-6134.
For help, please do not forward an email request to the IT distribution list or to any other College email list or to anyone at the College. That will only delay getting help to you, as well as distracting IT people with other responsibilities.
Spam Emails
With the ongoing increase in spam emails globally, any of us may have the misfortune of receiving a spam email in our LaGuardia Outlook box. The safest, fastest and best way to handle spam you receive is to notify the IT HelpDesk by forwarding the original spam email to SPAM@lagcc.cuny.edu. As soon as IT learns about a spam email, it will delete the email from all email boxes and block the sender.
After you forward the spam email to our spam email address, delete it immediately. Please do not forward the spam email to the IT distribution list, to any other College email list or to anyone at the College. If you forward the spam email to anyone in the College, the risk for overcoming cybersecurity measures and increasing the damage the email can cause will grow significantly.
In addition, do not reply to the spam email or click on any links or try to unsubscribe. If there is a phone number listed in the email, do not call or send a text to the number. Please let your colleagues and students know about the scam you’ve received.
