President's Message

Dear Colleagues,

We are at the halfway mark of the year and the ACVR council has been busy with the Spring Council Meeting. We held the meeting in Chicago as a hybrid event, and it was wonderful to connect with those who attended in person and online. The council members are such an engaged and creative group of people, it’s a privilege to work with them to advance the goals of our College.

The Council meeting is an evolving entity as the College grows beyond the traditional capacity of holding two one-day meetings to accomplish all our business. This year we have implemented bi-monthly meetings to cover the committee reports and any business that needs more immediate response. That has freed up some time to do some forward planning at the Spring meeting, which I think is essential to our continued growth and development. We have many excellent ideas that could help the College’s mission, and we spent time debating what our priorities are and how we could have the most impact.

The core discussion was around the Strategic Plan, which is due for renewal after a 5-year term. We evaluated ourselves on which goals we have met, and which will be important in the next 5 years. We are now in the process of aligning our activities under each section of the strategic plan and revising the plan for the next period. My overall impression was that we have accomplished an impressive amount in that 5-year period with the small number of people who serve as committee members and in strategic positions. One example is the goal to facilitate program delivery in academia and private practice. To that end, we have revised the DI Residency Essentials to improve flexibility of Diplomates involved, created RIVDI for case-based practice, and ITEC for mock exams as low-stakes self-evaluation opportunities for residents. We had 60 new Diplomates in 2022 (46 DI, 11 RO, 3 EDI) compared to 40 in 2018 (34 DI, 6 RO) There are also now three times as many private practice residencies in 2022 (15) compared to 2018 (5). These types of innovative initiatives are what makes our College so vibrant and invested in the success of our community.

Council is continuing to work on the Strategic Plan revision and flesh out our initiatives for the next period. Our Job Task Analysis will be completed in the summer, which will give us more evidence to guide the needs of trainees for the future of practice. We will also be collecting opinions from Diplomates about their challenges and desire to participate in training programs, as well as new ideas on how to expand resident training. It’s clear that there is a Diplomate shortage in many Colleges, including ours, and it is up to us to respond with creative and novel processes that maintain our quality standards and expand access to training. Dr. Drost has been participating in discussions at the specialty level, and the Specialty Veterinary Medicine Stakeholder Summit recently released a white paper advocating for increasing support for training programs. ACVR Council will take this into account as we prepare for the next iteration of our Strategic Plan and how our activities can meet these needs.

Reminder for Radiation Oncology Diplomates and Residents

For those radiation oncologists planning to attend ACVR this fall in New Orleans, please note that we have shifted our program days to Wednesday and Thursday. This has been repeatedly suggested and requested by our members and the exhibitors over the years and we were able to accommodate this.
