The Mayor’s Back to School Fest Presented by Shell is designed to help Houston-area elementary school students and their families as they prepare to return to school. In addition to distributing 25,000 backpacks with school supplies, the event will feature on-site health screenings to include: dental screenings and sealants, vision screenings, and routine immunizations. The Houston Texans Campeón de la Comunidad Award presented by Modelo honors an outstanding leader in the Hispanic community who is making a positive impact on the City of Houston through service and dedication to a local nonprofit.
The winner will receive a $15,000 grant in their honor to the nonprofit of their choice. Two runners up will each receive donations in their name of $5,000 each.

The Houston Health Department encourages people to take extra precautions to protect themselves from heat-related illness and death. High-risk groups such as adults ages 55 and older, children under the age of 4, and people with chronic illness or who are either overweight or on certain medications should stay inside air-conditioned buildings between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. -- the hottest part of the day.
