Seeking Volunteers in Rural Counties & Diverse Populations

Would you or someone you know make a great Champion?

Our Champions present Dementia Friends sessions and Dementia Friendly Business trainings in their local communities. Currently, we have Volunteer Champion Presenters in around 75% of Iowa counties. Most of the unreached counties are rural. In addition, we are seeking Champion volunteers who are bi-lingual to help offer sessions in other languages.

To become a Champion, you must attend a two-hour virtual training. Upcoming Champion Trainings are scheduled for:

  1. Thursday, May 23, 9-11am (via Zoom)
  2. Wednesday, June 26, 2-4pm (via Zoom)
  3. Tuesday, July 30, 11am-1pm (via Zoom)

Register for the Champion Volunteer Training here.

Dementia Friends: How Have YOU Taken Action?

Turning Understanding into Action for Lasting Impact

If you've become a Dementia Friend, you've learned about ways you can support people with dementia in your community. Have you taken action? Need some inspiration?

Here are some ideas of actions that other Dementia Friends are taking across Iowa:

  1. Initiate dementia friendly changes or practices within your business or organization
  2. Contact a community resource to seek out assistance for yourself, someone living with dementia, or a family caregiver
  3. Carry out a personal action (such as being more patient when out in the community)
  4. Share the information from the session with someone who might benefit
  5. Ask your doctor for a cognitive assessment or encourage someone else to do so
  6. Get in touch with someone you know living with dementia
  7. Change your language about dementia (such as “living with dementia” instead of “suffering with dementia”)
  8. Support or start a local dementia friendly community initiative
  9. Encourage friends to become Dementia Friends
  10. Volunteer for an organization that supports people with dementia
  11. Become a Dementia Friends Champion Volunteer
  12. Possibilities are endless! What can you do?

One Dementia Friend recently shared with us, "I have been calling my grandma more often and being more patient with her. Learning more about dementia at Dementia Friends helped me to be more considerate when talking to her, and also less scared to talk to her."

All actions count- big or small. What can YOU do to help build a dementia friendly community?
