Member Business of the Week

Zeppa’s New York Pizza is a family-owned and operated business. The owners, Lisa and Hugh were both born and raised in New York. Lisa’s family-owned Dominick’s Italian Restaurant in New Paltz, NY for 37 years.

Hugh was a bartender at Dominick’s during his college years and that’s when he and Lisa started dating and have since been married for 31 years. Hugh and Lisa have two (adult) children Hannah and Riley. Riley is the kitchen manager at Zeppa’s and Hannah works in the arts in Southern California.

We bought Mike’s Country Store in February of 2022. The almost 100-year-old building needed lots of work. So, another family ventured, Hugh, his brother Chris, and our good friend George spent 5 months fully renovating and updating the building. Thank you to Chris and George for their countless hours helping us!

The name Zeppa’s…. Hugh, Lisa, Hannah, and Riley are HUGE DOG LOVERS. Over the past 31 years, we have always had anywhere from 2-5 dogs at a time. ALL RESCUES.

In Italian, Zeppa is a shoe -but- to us, Zeppa is our 13-year-old mini–Australian Sheppard. She is a very special dog to us that just happens to be FOOD OBSESSED! So, we thought naturally the name Zeppa’s was fitting for a pizzeria!

Many of our recipes go back several generations to Lisa’s family in Italy. Other recipes were developed in partnership with Mark and Jenny Bello of Pizza School NYC.

We hope you enjoy our pizzeria!

Please come and give us a try! We think you’ll love our New York Pizza — P.S. … leave room for a homemade Cannoli, they are amazing!

From The City of Ellsworth

In a proactive effort to bolster safety measures for City of Ellsworth employees, the staff safety committee recently identified a need for improved access to first aid supplies for City vehicles operated by the Highway, Water, and Wastewater Departments.

Thomas Canavan, the Fire and Life Safety Officer and chair of the staff safety committee, led the initiative to secure 15 first aid kits to equip city vehicles. Working with established community connections, the Safety Officer reached out to local businesses known for their support of safety initiatives. Letters of request outlining the need and purpose were sent to Hammond Lumber, Home Depot, and Walmart.

City of Ellsworth employees greatly thank Hammond Lumber for providing ten first aid kits, Home Depot for an additional five kits, and Walmart who granted a $200 gift card, facilitating the purchase of supplementary supplies and extra kits for restocking purposes.

City Manager Pearce, alongside Safety Officer Thomas Canavan, personally distributed the first aid kits to the Highway, Water, and Wastewater Departments, ensuring that each city vehicle is adequately equipped to handle basic first aid needs.

In a separate development, on April 24th, 2024, the Safety Officer secured a generous donation from a local benefactor, who has chosen to remain anonymous, to fund an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for Ellsworth’s Harbor Park and Marina. The AED will be housed with the Harbormaster Officer, enhancing emergency response capabilities in the area.

For those unfamiliar with an AED, it is a critical medical device designed to assist individuals experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. This user-friendly device can analyze the heart’s rhythm and deliver an electrical shock if necessary, aiding in the restoration of a normal heartbeat.

By proactively addressing employee safety concerns and investing in essential life-saving equipment, the City Safety Committee reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding the well-being of its workforce and the community at large.

What's Happening Around Town

Look at that face! This is Georgie and he is just as sweet as he looks. Georgie is a 1- 2 year old yellow lab with a love for life and people! We unfortunately do not have any history on Georgie’s time prior to being here at the SPCA-HC other than that he was picked up as a stray. Since being in our care, he is now neutered and up to date on all necessary vaccinations and medical treatments. Georgie is very food motivated and loves treats, which is very important as he arrived to us underweight. We are working on getting him up to a healthy weight and he is more than happy to help with that! Georgie is your typical young lab - active, loves exercise, and is happy to get outside to play. He has interacted positively with other dogs here at the shelter, but of course dog relationships depend on a variety of factors. Georgie will be an absolutely wonderful companion for the right household! Please visit our website and complete an adoption application if you are interested in giving this cutie goober his new forever home! Once an application is approved, we can schedule meet and greets for you to get to know Georgie!

Announcing the 2024 Cathy and Jim Gero Acadia Early-Career Fellows

Winter Harbor - Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park is pleased to announce the 2024 Cathy and Jim Gero Acadia Early-Career Fellows in Science Research, Science Communication, and Environmental Science Education. Working at the intersection of conservation, scientific research, education, and communication, this cadre of early-career professionals will work alongside National Park Service and Schoodic Institute staff in Acadia National Park and surrounding areas.

Science Research Fellow Louisa Liu graduated from the University of California-Davis with a degree in wildlife, fish, and conservation biology along with multiple seasons of varied field work experiences. Liu’s collegiate and professional experience spans from tending bird nesting boxes and surveying vegetation to monitoring bats and trapping small mammals in Lassen Volcanic National Park.

“Since landing three weeks ago, this fellowship has already spurred my growth as a scientist and given me plentiful resources to explore burgeoning ideas. With the invaluable guidance of supportive mentors at Schoodic Institute, I can't wait to see through our newly updated acoustic avian monitoring project, embark on naturalist adventures with new friends, and grow as part of the wonderfully collaborative community in the Northeast,” said Liu.

Trevor Grandin of St. Louis, Missouri, is the Science Communication Fellow. Grandin graduated with a degree in communications from Truman State University, where he managed the college radio station. Grandin most recently worked as a producer for local NPR stations. He will build on this experience to produce a third season of Acadia National Park’s podcast, Sea to Trees, and host future episodes of Coastal Conversations on WERU.

“I've always had a great curiosity for the natural world. If I can impart that same curiosity and love of nature on the readers and listeners who consume my work, I'd consider this fellowship a success,” said Grandin. “I can't put into words how lovely it is that I get to pursue my interests in a place like Acadia National Park. I can only hope that the people, places, plants and animals of Maine allow me to tell their stories!”

Environmental Science Education Fellow Lauren Knierim graduated from Clemson University with a degree in wildlife and fisheries biology and has experience in Pennsylvania as an environmental educator. Since graduating, Knierim has continued to engage and teach the public at Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge in Georgia, where developed, coordinated, and led outreach and education programs both online and in person. Knierim will apply these skills while working with the Schoodic Education Adventure program and park visitors.

“For me, this fellowship is an opportunity to be fully immersed in the integration of research, communication, and education and to use the experience to further develop tools that connect people to place and make science more accessible to all. I feel incredibly fortunate to share this experience with like-minded professionals who are committed to creating a better future for people and our planet.”

Established in 2022, the Cathy and Jim Gero Acadia Early-Career Fellowship is a highly competitive 10-month program for recent college graduates to develop professional skills in conservation fields, engage learners of all ages in science, and advance science to inform park stewardship. The fellowship is possible through the generous support of Catherine and James Gero, the National Park Service, Schoodic Institute, and the National Park Foundation.

Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park is inspiring science, learning, and community for a changing world. As a nonprofit partner in science and education, Schoodic Institute and Acadia National Park work together to manage the largest of 17 National Park Service Research Learning Centers.
