Jake receives his diploma from Coach Diaz

In other news, our son Jacob graduated from Centenary College of Louisiana with a BS in Business Administration last weekend. We had a whirlwind trip to the south, which included a trip to Magnolia Market in Waco, two complete games and two innings of baseball, and a Texas-sized thunderstorm with rain, wind, hail, and lightning strikes. It was a great time!

Since the Centenary Gents qualified for the SCAC baseball tournament, his graduation took place at The Depot at Cleburne Station, home of the Railroaders independent team. It was very fitting for Jake to graduate in his baseball uniform, swapping his hat for a Grad cap minutes before the ceremony.

As I looked around at the parents, I imagined all of the hours of baseball these families have experienced. Starting with T-ball and Little League, moving on to All-Stars and Travel teams, going to showcases, clinics, and tournaments in freezing cold rainstorms and the blazing summer sun. These young men were standouts at their high schools; all-league selections, league or section champs, stat leaders, MVPs. Then on to college, whether starting at a community college or straight to a four-year university, learning to balance their studies with practice and playing time.

I thought about the dads who spent countless hours throwing batting practice in their backyards, setting up elaborate whiffle ball games, and playing catch until it was too dark to see the ball. The moms who brought snacks, got the grass stains out of the white baseball pants, and made sure the socks, belt, and undershirt matched. The siblings who tagged along, played in the dirt, and can rate a ball park by its snack bar offerings.

We all had similar, shared experiences which led to this incredible accomplishment. There’s no crying in baseball, but a few tears might have slipped by.

Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to shelleybennett24@gmail.com and I’ll do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”

Police Chief Ryan Cochran Encourages

Riders to Stay Safe During Bike Safety Month

May is National Bicycle Safety Month and the Susanville Police Department is encouraging more people to get active and safely take bike rides.

The department was at the Lassen County Children’s Fair on Saturday, handing out pamphlets on bicycle safety.

To help keep people biking or walking safe, the Susanville Police Department will conduct traffic safety operations focused on driver behaviors that put bicyclists and pedestrians at risk, such as speeding, making illegal turns, failure to yield right of way, and stop sign/red light running.

The Susanville Police Department suggests the following safety tips for bicyclists and drivers:

Drivers

• Slow down and follow the speed limit. Be careful traveling through intersections.

• Look carefully for bicyclists and pedestrians before making a turn or opening a car door near streets or bike paths.

• Be patient when traveling behind a bicyclist and give them space when passing. California law requires drivers to change a lane, when possible, to pass bicyclists.

• Never drive distracted or impaired.

Bike Riders

• Use lights at night.

• Although not required for riders 18 and older, always wear a properly secured helmet. Helmets significantly reduce the chance of a head injury in the event of a crash.

• Bicyclists must travel in the same direction of traffic and have the same requirements as any slow-moving vehicle.

• Yield to pedestrians, just as a driver would. Pedestrians have the right-of-way within marked or unmarked crosswalks at intersections.

BLM Reminds Off-Highway Travelers to

Avoid Driving on Muddy Roads

The Bureau of Land Management is asking the public to avoid driving on muddy roads. Recent winter storms have left a high potential for road damage and erosion on BLM-managed public lands in northeast California.

Winter weather and road conditions can change quickly, please gauge your winter safety awareness and recreate responsibly.

Staff in the Applegate Field Office have reported increasing damage to roads leading into firewood cutting areas. Road repairs will be costly and, in some cases, the damage is made worse by efforts to free vehicles mired in the mud.

The BLM is asking people to pay close attention to road conditions when venturing out into any public land areas during the spring months.

“Wood cutters should remember that rutting roads violates the terms in their permits. It’s best to plan activities for early morning while the ground is still frozen,” said Applegate Field Manager Craig Drake.

Drake advises visitors to carefully plan their visits, Know Before You Go and realize conditions can change quickly. Bringing the 10 Essentials, packing a winter car kit, and checking road and weather conditions can make your visit a success.

The BLM urges public land visitors to call the nearest BLM office to check on conditions before venturing into the back country.

In northeast California, information on road conditions is available from the Applegate Field Office in Alturas, 530-233-4666; and the Eagle Lake Field Office in Susanville, 530-257-0456.
