Happy September!
Hi neighbor,

Although we are entering Fall, my team and I have been embracing the California sun and have introduced our first-ever farmers market series called "Plaza Azul" which takes place right outside of City Hall.

We had our first Plaza Azul Farmers Market on Tuesday, August 29th and it was exciting to see so many City Hall employees come to City Hall Plaza and shop for fresh fruits, veggies, artisanal goods, and more from the wonderful Berryessa Flea Market vendors.

Join us for all the fun at the City Hall Rotunda and enjoy our farmers market every Tuesday from 12PM-3PM through November 14th.
I would like to thank Councilmember Omar Torres and the vendors from the Berryessa Flea Market for their participation and efforts in making this happen and allowing us to have Plaza Azul be a continuous occasion. It is heartwarming to see City Hall employees, residents, and San Jose State students who came out to support our first farmers market and took this time to benefit their mental and physical health by purchasing nutritious fruits and vegetables.

Another health-minded effort I've launched is our monthly Longevity Walks. Our next Longevity Walk is on Wednesday, September 13th from 12PM-1PM. As always, our walk will begin at City Hall. Join me, City Hall employees, and plenty of your San Jose neighbors as we walk to Adobe Headquarters in Downtown next week.

Make sure to join us every Tuesday through November 14th, 2023 for the next Plazas Azul where plenty of vendors look forward to offering you and all of our neighbors fresh fruits and vegetables, trendy apparel, and locally made arts and crafts!
Best,

Dev

San Jose Electrical Utility

City staff from our Community Energy Department (CED) have been exploring the idea of the City creating its own electrical utility. The idea for San Jose Power comes in response to growing reliability concerns centering around PG&E. In addition to blackouts and backlogged maintenance, there are development projects including housing developments that become delayed due to PG&E’s long interconnection cue. This item was expected to be heard in August, but has since been pushed back until Tuesday, October 3rd to allow CED staff more time to do outreach to relevant stakeholders.

If you wish to share any thoughts or opinions, feel free to reach out to my office.
City’s Revolving Door Policy

Last week my colleagues and I voted to make changes to the City’s Revolving Door Policy. The policy aims to prevent ex-City employees from leveraging their influence on policy matters at City Hall by working for a lobbyist. There is an exemption to this policy for non-profit organizations. Our local non-profits do great work on behalf of our residents, but I believe that in the interest of transparency and fairness we should treat all organizations the same.

The recommendation to remove the non-profit exemption from the Revolving Door Policy came to us from the Board of Fair Campaign and Political Practices. I agreed with this recommendation, but a majority of my colleagues did not and the exemption remains a part of the policy. I wanted to share this thought so you all know why I voted the way I did.

Walk Safe San Jose

Walk Safe San Jose is a pedestrian safety plan that encourages walking, biking, and taking public transit. The goal is to improve pedestrian safety by providing safe routes for vulnerable road users.

Some goals are to reduce and eventually eliminate traffic deaths and severe injuries, focus on corridor-based projects like paint, cones, flexible barriers, and signage.

Please take the survey to notify the City of some of the safer walking routes in San Jose. This will inform people in San Jose's inner neighborhoods about some safe and healthy ways to go on walks!
