Dear Aoki Community,

Happy Labor Day! Let us fondly reflect on the historic worker organized initiatives, strikes, and demonstrations which led to many of the employment and labor rights we appreciate today. The recent rise in labor organizing across the U.S. serves as a reminder that collective action is needed for transformational change!

In Solidarity,

Dean Kevin R. Johnson recommends reading Professor Sarkar's forthcoming article! Enjoy this teaser:

UCD Grand Challenges: Reimagining the Land-Grant University
Land-grant universities were created in the 1800s taking nearly 11 million acres of land from approximately 250 tribes, bands, and communities. As a land-grant university, UC Davis faces the challenge of fully reckoning with and growing from our history to ensure it is advancing equity, creating opportunity for Native American students.

Grand Challenges supports this work of addressing the harmful origins and complex aims of our land-grant university while developing a model of positive public impact and equity for others to follow. Read the June 2023 Graduate Student Report and email grandchallenges@ucdavis.edu for ways to support this important project.

The Aoki Center would love to hear your thoughts and insights on this initiative! Email our Fellow, Giselle at gigarcia@ucdavis.edu to discuss more.

#EndSolitaryConfinement - Call to Action from the California Mandela Campaign
A community of advocates and non-profit organizations launched the California Mandela Campaign (CMC). The CMC was formed to support the fight to end solitary confinement in California, and support the passing of AB 280 - the California Mandela Act.

The California Mandela Act places comprehensive limits on the use of solitary confinement in jails and prisons, and is the first bill in the nation to also cover private immigration detention facilities. The legislation bans the use of solitary confinement against pregnant people, individuals with certain disabilities, as well as individuals under 26 and over 59.

With research universities focusing on research, and teaching universities focusing on teaching undergraduate students, graduate students are often left underserved with inaccessible resources at comprehensive research and teaching institutions. What are the differences between these institutions? What solutions can increase student success and sense of self belonging for first-generation graduate students while at these institutions?
