Bikes for the World
The annual Bikes for the World collection will be held on May 17 at Canal Place from 10 am until noon. Repairable bikes and portable sewing machines are collected and shipped overseas to developing countries or programs for at-risk youth in the U.S. Bikes for the World officials suggest those donating bikes and sewing machines also donate $10 to help defray shipping costs. The Western Maryland Wheelmen and the Cumberland Rotary support the project, but since it costs about $20 to ship one bike overseas, contributing cash or a check can send a bike to where it will have an enormous impact. Bikes for the World is a nonprofit organization and donations are tax deductible.

Azad’s of Cumberland
37 N. Centre Street • 301-723-0818
A retail experience venue featuring collectible rugs while hosting events for friends, family, musicians and artists.
An ALL NEW Season of Azad's Yappy Hour runs through DelFest, featuring some of our favorite local musicians sharing a little bit about themselves and their music, and their personal "Road to DelFest" story and journey. What is a Yappy Hour? You may ask. It is a time to get together with the basic goal of getting to know one another a little bit more. It's a time to YAP with one another. Or, as Andy Griffith used to say, a time to "Sit & Jaw" with one another.
Each Wednesday, guests are welcome to begin to gather any time after 4:30 PM. Our featured guests will take about 30 minutes beginning around 5:15 to share a little about themselves and take questions from the crowd. Afterward, guests are welcome to hang or grab a few new friends and head to one of our great neighbors in Downtown Cumberland for dinner, trivia or drinks.

Allegany County Animal Shelter

• Thinking about adding a furry friend to your family? Now’s the perfect time!
Through the end of April, we’re reducing dog adoption fees to just $50!
The same loving pups, the same thorough application screening process—but with a little extra help getting them into forever homes.
Please remember: while adoption fees are reduced, the cost of caring for a dog remains the same. Make sure you’re ready for the commitment—emotionally and financially. Meet your new best friend today.

• Hounds Around Town - Looking for a day filled with furry friends and fun? Then look no further than the Allegany County Animal Shelter's "Hounds Around Town" program, allowing individuals to sign a shelter dog out for the day. The beautiful mountains of Western Maryland present an excellent opportunity for our shelter dogs to experience the joy of a long walk, hike or run in many of the area's scenic locations. Are you looking for something more low-key? No problem. We have many pups that would enjoy an afternoon lounging on a couch, a stroll through the neighborhood, or maybe a trip for ice cream. The most important thing is giving an adoptable shelter dog a much-needed break from the kennels and providing enrichment and socialization. For more information on the Hounds Around Town program, contact the shelter at 301-777-5930.

• Dust Bunny Round UP - The Allegany County Animal Shelter can use your help. The shelter is filled with great animals looking for their furever homes. While they are at the shelter, their care is our priority. And that means there are jobs that our staff and volunteers just can’t get done. We could use your helping hands to get our shelter looking its best. Please join us on Sunday, June 22, at the ACAS Clean Up Day.
There are plenty of jobs – inside and outside - that we hope to get done. Whatever your skills, we will find the right task for you.
• Paint and building repairs
• Upkeep and cleaning outside dog pens and play areas
• Build a shed ramp
• Clean and organize food and storage sheds.
• Poop scoop shelter grounds.
• Regravel the play area.
• Dishwashing and laundry
• Clean out the planters and plant flowers
Volunteer registration for the shelter's Summer Clean Up are online at www.alleganyanimalshelter.org/cleanup.
Rain Day is scheduled for Sunday, June 29. Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for (audience)? Why should they care (benefit)? What do I want them to do (call-to-action)?
Create a great offer by adding words like "free," "personalized," "complimentary," or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take action, so consider inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"

With changes in reality, marked particularly by the influence of social media and increasing globalization, the world has become a much smaller place. These changes by themselves are neither good nor bad but do represent a marked acceleration in the pace of our lives and access to almost anything. Our environment, in turn, has become more volatile and our lives more vulnerable, and this calls for an unprecedented need for responsibility and belonging. How do we achieve this? What role can each of us play? Tibetan Monks of The Mystical Arts of Tibet is presented in partnership with the Allegany Arts Council. This event is free and open to the public.

The Cumberland Theatre is introducing a “Page to Stage” new play development program in which audiences experience the “birth” of a play. The goal of the program is to assist playwrights with the development of new works.
Encompassing commissions, readings, workshops and workshop productions, Page To Stage serves the specific needs of a project at all stages in its evolution, helping artists take their work to the next level of development. The theatre intends to take one original pay per year through workshop, staged reading and production.
This year’s selection is The Haverton Howler, a retro comedy by Ashley Snow. The Haverton Howler covers the hilarious events that transpire when Clifford and Ginny Haverton invent a whimsical tale about the “Haverton Howler” to save their struggling grocery store - what starts as a clever marketing ploy quickly spirals into a full-blown local legend. Rival reporters, a conspiracy theorist, an animal rights activist, and an ambitious filmmaker all descend on the town, each eager to capture the elusive creature—or at least a piece of the story. As excitement mounts, Clifford encounters unsettling truths that challenge him to confront deeper struggles within their community. As the myth of the Howler spirals out of control, will it overshadow the real stories that matter, or spark genuine change?
The Page to Stage Journey will begin this weekend (April 12th and 13th) with a private workshop in which actors will read and discuss the play with the playwright. This is an invitation-only event to give the playwright some fresh perspective on her work and the opportunity for feedback from other artists, including the actors who are participating in the workshop. Minimal staging may take place to help the playwright visualize her work on stage so that changes may be made and new ideas may develop. Following this, a staged reading for the public will be held in May, in which the audience may also offer feedback to the playwright and the actors at the talk-back session immediately following. Finally, in November, the theatre will stage the play for a weekend – allowing audiences to see the evolution of the play from “page to stage.”
More information on ratings, group sales, etc. can be found on cumberlandtheatre.com where single tickets are available for purchase as well as 2025 Season Passes.

Embassy Theatre
49 Baltimore Street • 240-362-7183
www.embassytheatrecorp.org
Opening its doors to the public on November 18, 1931, the historic Embassy Theatre has become Cumberland’s premier venue for the performing arts and culture
| | • This year, treat your mother to brunch and a play! For Mother's Day, May 11, the Embassy will serve a light collation with a complimentary mimosa for $20 per person in addition to our general or senior admission fee of $18/16. Brunch will be served at 11 am, two hours before the theatre doors open for the performance. "Little Women" is a play adapted by Kate Hamill from the novel by Louisa May Alcott. Jo March isn’t your typical Victorian lady. She’s indecorous and headstrong; one day, she will be a great American novelist. In a war-torn world defined by gender, class, and personal tragedy, Jo March gives us her greatest story: that of the March sisters, four dreamers destined to be imperfect little women. The show runs May 9 - 18, with Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 pm. An additional Saturday matinee is on May 10 at 2 p.m. Please call the Embassy at (240) 362-7183 for more information and to make reservations for the special Mother's Day brunch. We ask that reservations for this event be made by Friday, April 9. The Embassy is located at 49 Baltimore Street in newly landscaped downtown Cumberland. Free parking is available on weekends and evenings at the CBIZ parking lot on Mechanic Street. | |
Ferleman Gallery presents
"Echoes of Light" - A Solo Exhibiton by painter Wendell Myers
9 N. Centre Street • www.ferleman.com • art@ferleman.com
Gallery hours are Tuesday – Thursday, 10 am – 4 pm; Friday, 10 am – 8 pm; Saturday, 10 am – 8 pm
With over 10,000 sq. ft. of stunning event space across two floors, the Ferleman Gallery is the perfect setting for weddings, receptions, parties, and meetings. Make your special occasion truly unforgettable in the area’s premier art galle
Ferleman Gallery is pleased to announce Echoes of Light, a solo exhibition by painter Wendell Myers, opening Friday, April 4, 2025, in the cultural heart of historic Cumberland, Maryland. This timely presentation of thirty-two works arrives at a moment when collective uncertainty and division underscore the need for visual clarity and quietude. Through luminous explorations of color, form, and nature, Myers invites a return to sensorial presence and contemplative stillness.
In a period marked by political tumult and social fracture, Echoes of Light offers more than aesthetic pleasure—it functions as a visual refuge, a meditative space in which the natural world speaks in chromatic whispers and radiant gestures. Trees shimmer in defiance of despair, skies stretch toward hope, and flowers bloom with unapologetic vitality. Myers' paintings articulate a counterpoint to chaos, restoring attention to beauty, resilience, and the subtle harmonies of lived experience.
Highlights include Garnet Hill (2025), a commanding topography of deep reds and shadowed greens that suggests both internal and external landscapes of reckoning, and Pink and Yellow Flowers(2025), where compressed spatial relationships become metaphors for constraint, adaptation, and renewal.
An artist talk at 1:00 PM on April 5th will offer deeper insight into Myers' process and his reflections on how art might respond—not react—to the world’s dissonance.
For more information, please contact Ferleman Gallery at (240) 609-0077 or art@ferleman.com.
