SPECIAL NEWS AND INFORMATION

SUMMER REFLECTION

Continuing in our lectionary series, we continue to hear more and more about the patriarch Abraham and his wife Sarah. This complicated family system has been in flux for the last few chapters. Like the eviction of Hagar and Ishmael that we studied last week. However, this week things are about to become a little more complex. God is asking of Abraham something that is unbelievable and unbearable. Abraham hears from God that he must offer up his son, whom he loves, as a sacrifice to God. The child of the promise and the child of the covenant. The one that was promised to become a great nation of many descendants. But what Abraham believed and what we are called to believe too, is not that God will command this of us, but that in the midst of testing, God always provides. So come this week, to hear about the ways in which God provided and provides.

Yours in Christ,

Brandon

You should have plenty of time to secure your personal copy and join them in class. Good used copies can be found on Amazon, as well as BetterWorldBooks.com.

The class meets in the Poteat Library at 10 am. If you wish to join the class there is always room for one more.

GOOD SAMARITAN SUMMER BACK TO SCHOOL DRIVE

GOOD SAM Back to School program participants will receive two food boxes during the summer months and a backpack for each registered child attending school in August.

Food Box Distribution 2 & Backpacks - July 21-22, 2023

Since we are waiting to hear what food items we are to collect, in the meantime you can still bring school supplies. As soon as we know about the canned items, we'll let you know.

We continue to collect cans of these items through July 17 for food box 2. Items can be placed in the big container located in the side entry hall.

For backpacks Good Samaritan Ministries needs the following unused / new items for our Back to School Program: 1″ hard cover binders; Loose leaf paper (college and wide rule); Black/blue ball point pens; Red ball point pens; 24-count crayon packs; 12-ct colored pencils; #2 pencils; Highlighters; Glue sticks; 12″ rulers. The ministry strongly recommends choosing one or two items to focus your collection drive.

If you wish to contribute monetarily, please make your check out to WAPC and be sure to include Good Sam backpacks in the note line.

NOTEWORTHY GREEN SPACE NEWS

From rugged marine iguanas sunbathing on basalt shorelines to tortoises plodding across grassy plains, the Galápagos Islands boast unparalleled biodiversity. Earlier this year the Ecuadorian government again confirmed its commitment to protecting this rich ecosystem by creating the Hermandad Marine Reserve—expanding the established protected area by nearly a third and bringing the total area of protected waters around the islands to nearly 77,000 square miles.

Pablo Guerrero, the conservation director for World Wildlife Fund-Ecuador, called the creation of the reserve "fantastic news for Ecuador and for the world. . . . These enchanted islands continue their journey as a living laboratory and take a great step toward achieving the common goal of protecting 30% of our planet's oceans by 2030." Now the Ecuadorian government has called on WWF-Ecuador and other organizations to craft a long-term plan to guide the management of the new reserve. "Adequate planning and zoning of the new area will guarantee inclusive conservation, tourism development, and economic benefits for everybody," says Guerrero.  (GSN#154)

FAROE ISLANDS

CHANNELING NATURE (June 2021 | 11:15 min.)

The Faroe or Faeroe Islands (in Faroese Føroyar) are 18 islands in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, northwest of Scotland and halfway between Iceland and Norway. The Islands are a self-governing island territory of Denmark, although they politically aim for higher independence. The countryside is dominated by steep mountains and there are about 70,000 sheep and some 2 million pairs of seabirds, including the largest colony of storm petrels in the world. The Faroe Islands are undeniably beautiful: green, rugged and wind-swept. The fresh air, the deep blue ocean, the vertical sea cliffs and the green mountains with their picturesque valleys, is something which would amaze anyone who enjoys being surrounded by nature. The archipelago has the type of striking views typical of volcanic islands, like windswept mountains, crashing waves, and jagged coastlines.

Misquoting Jesus

By Bart D. Ehrman

(225.4/EHR)

When world-class biblical scholar Bart Ehrman first began to study the texts of the Bible in their original languages he was startled to discover the multitude of mistakes and intentional alterations that had been made by earlier translators. In Misquoting Jesus, Ehrman tells the story behind the mistakes and changes that ancient scribes made to the New Testament and shows the great impact they had upon the Bible we use today. He frames his account with personal reflections on how his study of the Greek manuscripts made him abandon his once ultraconservative views of the Bible.

Since the advent of the printing press and the accurate reproduction of texts, most people have assumed that when they read the New Testament they are reading an exact copy of Jesus's words or Saint Paul's writings. And yet, for almost fifteen hundred years these manuscripts were hand copied by scribes who were deeply influenced by the cultural, theological, and political disputes of their day. Both mistakes and intentional changes abound in the surviving manuscripts, making the original words difficult to reconstruct. For the first time, Ehrman reveals where and why these changes were made and how scholars go about reconstructing the original words of the New Testament as closely as possible.

Ehrman makes the provocative case that many of our cherished biblical stories and widely held beliefs concerning the divinity of Jesus, the Trinity, and the divine origins of the Bible itself stem from both intentional and accidental alterations by scribes -- alterations that dramatically affected all subsequent versions of the Bible.

Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"
