Volume 12 No 4 | June 2023

The Christmas Bride in Concert is about the singing (some of the finest voices in Maine) and about the characters (thanks to Charles Dickens), but it's also about the story (a charming musical romance suitable for all ages) and, well, it's about Christmas too!

Join our CHRISTMAS IN JULY celebration - The Christmas Bride in Concert has three performances only in three Maine venues (Freeport, Portland, Boothbay Harbor) on July 8, 9, and 11. Don't miss this unique event!

A Stellar Cast of Singers Brings

The Christmas Bride to Life!

Acclaimed for his “exemplary diction and rich baritone voice” (Boston Phoenix), cast member Aaron Engebreth enjoys an active solo career in opera, oratorio, recital, and yes, musical theater too!

Aaron will lead an accomplished group of singers (including Maine favorites Mary Johnston Letellier, Alan McLucas, and Kelly Caufield) in an ensemble of quirky Dickensian characters that will charm you in this musical romance full of humor, danger, discovery, and delight, suitable for all ages! The wonderful ensemble also includes Emily Bartley, Joel Crowley, Chris Newcomb, Pat Scully, Betsey deGroff and Teresa Dyer.

And returning to reprise his role from the 2011 Portland production of The Christmas Bride, New York actor David Arthur Bachrach will also join the cast.

The Christmas Bride in Concert focuses on the singing, with narration and dialogue to bridge the songs. On a stage lightly decorated with simple Christmas cheer, eleven singer-actors at music stands will be accompanied by a three piece band of piano, cello, and woodwinds. Together, the ensemble will create the magic of Christmas - in July - by portraying eighteen characters straight out of Dickens' Victorian England, in a musical romance tale that features a lively musical theater score. This unique presentation, a musical performed as a concert, has been done with great success with other shows such as the televised concert of Les Miserables.

The 'Pink Scare' Takes Down Smith College Professors in a New Play by Patricia Mew

Snowlion Rep's PlayLab is workshopping a new play by longtime member Pat Mew and will present a public reading on July 30 at 7 pm.

In 1960, on the heels of the Red Scare initiated by Senator Joseph McCarthy, renowned Massachusetts women's college Smith became the focus of a nationwide hunt for certain 'undesirables.' The scandal that followed the discovery of damning erotic material enveloped three professors, and the college where they taught, in a story of betrayal, moral ambiguity, and professional disgrace that rocked the academic world and forced the accused to grapple with what, exactly, is the right thing to do.

Acting Classes are Back!

Snowlion Rep's comprehensive acting curriculum - FIVE different aspects of the actor's training that present in rotation - is commencing once more, starting with ACTION AND OBJECTIVE: The Heart of Acting Technique,

an in-depth look at two of the most important elements of the

actors work in creating a role to play.

Teacher Al D’Andrea and his students will use a variety of games, exercises, improvisations, and scene work to explore "what the character wants" (objective) and "what the character does to get what s/he wants" (action). Many influences on Action and Objective will be explored, including given circumstances, location, character, emotion, and justification. Much of the work will be based on Al's studies with stage legend Stella Adler.

The workshop is ideal for experienced actors who seek to master their understanding and use of these central elements of stagecraft. Beginning actors will receive a strong foundation in these critical elements of performance, often not emphasized in traditional acting classes. The class is open to all ages 16 and above.
