Sunapee Happenings

FOURTH OF JULY

This unique, antique 38 star flag flew on The Livery during Sunapee’s Sestercentennial, courtesy of Aaron Simpson. *The history of The Livery in Sunapee Harbor maybe found at: thelivery.org

Our nation’s flag had 38 stars when ground was broken for construction of Sunapee’s historic Livery in 1890.  On July 4th, 1890, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Washington were accepted into the union and 5 stars were added.

The Livery was built as a horse stable to serve the needs of the adjacent Harbor House Hotel.  In those days, access to Sunapee was primarily by train and steamboat. Visitors, once they arrived, had need for horses and carriages for hire.

“The beloved Livery is regarded as a symbol of the community and adapted with imagination and determination to serve the community in ever-changing ways”. James L. Garvin, NH State Architectural Historian.

Rollicking good fun under the stars at Northern Stage’s Theater with an adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Sense & Sensibility"

A playful new adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved novel follows the fortunes (and misfortunes) of the Dashwood sisters – sensible Elinor and passionate Marianne – after their father’s sudden death leaves them financially destitute and socially vulnerable. Set in gossipy late 18th century England, with a fresh female voice, the play is full of humor, emotional depth, and bold theatricality. Sense and Sensibility examines our reactions, both reasonable and ridiculous, to societal pressures. When reputation is everything, how do you follow your heart?  Learn More
