The City of Greater Sudbury - News and Updates

In this month's edition: Bike month, splash pads and free transit for seniors!

A Message From the Mayor

The longer days and warmer weather entice us to spend more time outdoors. This month, you’ll find me tuning up my bicycle and gearing up to ride.

June is Bike Month, and there are excellent opportunities to celebrate across Greater Sudbury, whether you’re an avid cyclist or preparing for your first time on two wheels. If you are seeking a new itinerary, Rainbow Routes Association has maps and guides of their extensive network of urban and wilderness trails that crisscross our city.

Bike Sudbury will be leading community rides every Thursday evening for the rest of the summer – including one I’ll be joining on June 8.

This year’s Bike Exchange will be hosted on June 18 in the Tom Davies Square courtyard. The event provides residents with a chance to trade in or receive a gently used bike, helping to make cycling more accessible for all families.

As more Sudbury residents commute to work and school on their bikes this season, I encourage all motorists to watch for increased cyclist traffic and to patiently share the road. And, of course, when you hop on your bike, please do so safely. Always wear a helmet, observe all traffic laws, and equip your bike with a light, a bell and reflective tape.

See you out on the trails!

Mayor Paul Lefebvre

Sustainable Waste Strategy

The City of Greater Sudbury is developing an updated Sustainable Waste Strategy to guide how the City will manage waste (e.g., garbage, food waste, etc.) for the next ten years.

This Strategy aims to improve waste management programs and services to make the City more sustainable. This is important to help optimize landfill space, achieve climate change goals, divert and reduce waste, improve convenience, and operate cost effectively.

Your feedback is important to us as we work to reduce waste, improve waste programs and services, save landfill space and operate cost effectively.

Fire Safety Tip of the Month:

Many people rent homes or apartments for vacations. These rentals are not regulated like hotels and motels. Practise home safety in rentals just like you do at home.

Make sure:

  • Everyone knows the address of the rental.

  • There are working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms outside each sleeping area and on every storey of the rental.

  • Everyone knows two ways out of every room and out of the rental if there is an emergency.

  • All doors and windows that lead outside can be easily opened.

  • You choose an outside meeting place a safe distance from the rental where everyone can meet and be accounted for in the event of a fire.

Snippets:

  • Good news for kids looking to cool down in this hot weather - the City's 17 splash pads are now open for the summer.
