In February, I had the pleasure of attending the Equine Reproduction short course, held by Jos Mottershead and Kathy St Martin at their Avalon Equine breeding facility. It was a brilliant 3-day weekend jam-packed with classroom, lab, and hands on instruction, complete with open dialogue on all things mare, foal, and stallion.
Read on, and don't be shy about securing your spot for their next session! These courses fill up fast!

Exciting news for jumper breeders! Farewell, Rotspon! Your Legacy Lives On...
|
|
We are sad to learn of Rotspon's recent passing. A son of the legendary stallion Rubinstein, Rotspon had an impressive and enduring impact on today's warmblood sporthorse, producing FEI competitors and licensed stallions, as well as qualified breeding mares, in his direct descendants and through second (and even third/fourth) generations. In 2017, he was named the Hanoveraner Verband Stallion of the Year in recognition of his impacts on Hanoverian breeding and the top quality of his offspring.
Fortunately, his legacy lives on in many North American stallions, allowing North American breeders access to his lineage and genetic influence. If you are looking to tap into these deep and invaluable genetics, be sure to check out these stallions on WarmbloodStallionsNA.com, where you can learn more about each stallion and inquire for your 2023 breeding contract.

Article written by Elizabeth Elkins for Dressage Today
We couldn't have said it better ourselves! The genetic composition of any offspring is a combination of both dam and sire, and let's not forget that it is typically the mare that imprints the foal in those sensitive first months. Therefore, it is paramount to consider the strengths and weaknesses of any mare (including behavioral traits) prior to making breeding decisions involving the stallion selection. Elizabeth Elkins breaks this down expertly in her article written for Dressage Today.
Click here to read this article on DressageToday.com, and if you haven't yet made your stallion selections for your mare this year, you might think twice before you finalize your plans!

2023 Registry Inspection Tours
|
|
Registry inspections are for more than just the breeders!
Spectators have the opportunity to connect with local breeders, browse potential offspring for sale, learn about bloodlines and breed objectives, while also building their network and deepening their appreciation for stallions, mares, and offspring in all phases of the registration and performance process. Many locations offer stallion and mare performance tests (which typically involve a number of advanced tests, including under saddle and free jumping requirements), and who doesn't enjoy watching foals and weanlings strut their stuff for the crowd!
Many registries now also include young horse futurity events where you can take your young horse for some great experience without the pressure of risky permanent records, and you may potentially come away with some earnings and bragging rights! If you're in the business if selling your offspring, these are relatively low cost opportunities to get scores and marketing materials, plus it enforces and proves out the basics in training for bathing, braiding, trailering, showing, etc. Great opportunities, all around!
Don't forget to browse the North American registry websites for announcements of their 2023 inspection locations and plan to attend one near you! Here are links to a couple tours with published locations and dates:
