Changing Lives Reception

History Corner

In January 1944, General Dwight Eisenhower (1890-1969) was appointed commander of Operation Overlord. In the months and weeks before D-Day, the Allies carried out a massive deception operation intended to make the Germans think the main invasion target was Pas-de-Calais (the narrowest point between Britain and France) rather than Normandy. In addition, they led the Germans to believe that Norway and other locations were also potential invasion targets. Many tactics were used to carry out the deception, including fake equipment; a phantom army commanded by George Patton and supposedly based in England, across from Pas-de-Calais; double agents; and fraudulent radio transmissions.

KEY POINTERS FOR THE SUNDAY MEMORIAL SERVICE

3. KEY POINTS HELD WITHIN THIS ARTICLE:

1. UNIFORM - CLASS A

2. WREATHS AND ORDERING

3. UNIT FLAGS AND FLAG DETAIL

Important news for your Normandy preparations!

As you make plans for the ceremony, please remember to bring your unit flag, as we will ask all of our units to have a unit flag bearer to line the sides of the reflective pool (see picture below). Unit flag bearers should also be wearing full class-A uniform – including uniform pants - if at all possible (as should all other Scouts and adult leaders!).

Also remember that units have the opportunity to lay a wreath as part of the ceremony. These are ordered through the registration process. If you haven’t ordered yours yet, you can return to the registration page and add that. The firm deadline for this is March 31st

Units will need to identify 1 to 2 youth member(s) to lay the wreath (more information will be provided as part of the program).

In addition to unit flag bearers, we are looking for units to volunteer to provide three youth members to provide the flag detail for the service

We are looking for the following:

· three Scouts BSA girls (all from the same troop)

· three Scouts BSA boys (all from the same troop)

· three Venturers (all from the same crew)

· three Sea Scouts (all from the same ship)

Mystery Bags Return

A very popular item with our Scouts is our Mystery Bag. A limited number of Mystery Bags will once again available through the Mobile Trading Post at the Normandy Camporee and Intercamp.

These Mystery Bags retail for $5 (or 5 Euros) each and contain a “mystery” of 4 collectable items (usually patches but not always).

Mystery bags are an inexpensive way to start a patch collection….. having items for trade or keep. This is a great product to support the Swapping Event on Saturday evening during the Normandy Camporee.

If you want to be sure your Scouts get one or more of these Mystery Bags, this and select other products can still be pre-ordered as part of your Normandy Camporee 2024 registration.

Revisit your registration and place your order before registration closes on March 31.
