Two nontraditional internship paths you might've overlooked
Andrea,

With the job market uncertain right now, a greater number of students will pursue non-traditional paths. This week, we wanted to share some resources that may help you find a great role, even if the job market continues softening.

To-do's this week
Got 5 minutes? Check out our resources for start-up and non-profit careers.
Got 30 minutes? Do some initial research on one or two "non-traditional" organizations that might be of interest to you.
Got an hour? Schedule virtual informational interviews with at least three individuals who have landed at non-profit or start-up organizations that are of interest to you.

Are MBAs getting jobs with start-ups?

In Week 37,, we had you consider your thoughts on entrepreneurship. Popular culture might have you believe that the vast majority of start-ups exist in Silicon Valley, and that if you're going to work for a start-up, you need to move West (and work for free).

However, start-ups can provide discrete projects and opportunities to build new skills. Governmental efforts, incubator programs, and well-funded venture capitalists help new companies gain traction. Now, are startups still hiring? Yes! While overall hiring levels are down, and you have less negotiating power than a few months ago, many startups have actually accelerated hiring for business development (to be less reliant on funding), and some have increased overall hiring due to stabilizing funding environments. There are some good opportunities out there!

Working with non-profit organizations

Non-profit organizations place considerable value on the importance of analytical thinking and quantitative tools as they manage their day-to-day activities. Given recent economic disruptions, many are also finding increased demand for their support and services. As a result, they are increasingly likely to hire individuals who can help them streamline their processes in all areas, including marketing, finance, and operations.
